Knockdhu International Fell Race
With England failing to make it to the 2004 Knockdhu International fell race in Larne, things looked even better for Scotland's teams. However, we then had the withdrawals of all but one of the senior women, ditto for the junior women.
On the day, race conditions were good. Tim Davies of Wales led the field home, with Scottish vet Stewart Whitlie second overall. Third was Alun Vaughan of Wales closely followed by another Scottish vet, Colin Donnelly. The Scottish men's senior team then packed in as 5th, 6th and 7th, with Tim Lenton , Brian Marshall and Jethro Lennox (in that order) taking the team title on countback from Wales. Euan Jardine finished 17th and 4th Scottish senior. Ronnie Gallagher (Westerlands) finishing 10th and Adrian Davis 13th overall gave Scotland the vet's team title too.
Notably, although Scotland's senior men won the team event from Wales by countback (your first three runners count), the Scottish vets actually beat the seniors. This was thanks to Stewart and Colin both being ahead of the first Scottish senior. Only Helen Murray turned out in Scotland colours for the senior women and was second overall. And Jennifer
Emsley, the only Scottish junior female, managed to win her event.
Scotland did manage to send a fine junior men's team. Ian Donnan won his event, followed by Scott Frazer in second, Andrew McCall 6th and Kyle Cowie 8th this strong team took the junior men's prize.
In the open race Scots runners virtually swept the board. Dan Whitehead (Cosmic HB) won the open race. Dave Hanlon (Dundee HH) took MV45 and the redoubtable Charlie Love won the MV60.
