Screel 27 March

Well done said Drew as he went past in the opposite direction, except there was only one direction to go in on this section of course. Oops.

A slightly depleted Westies turnout marked a warm, short and somewhat technical run over Screel. Jethro Lennox ran away to win in 27:50 just outside the course record. Brian Marshall amended for last year's "Drew" by finishing second, with Stewart Whitlie in third (and 1st vet). Ronnie was the first Westie home in ninth. Helen Murray of Lothian was first female although this is contested by John Donnelly who is down as FV40 in the overall classification. Westies Ladies were First team, with the men in third.

Well done folks! 3rd team is quite a good a result considering the opposition. Ronnie seems to be storming off into the sunset with Summer League with another cracking top ten run ,with the missing Damon not just writing off his chance to get back level on points, but also his car! I ,on the other hand ,was a write off well before the weekend with some really nasty throat thing that is now producing bucket-loads of green slime - that should slow down the opposition at the next race !Nige showed he's still got his sharpness and ran into lucky 13th without his high heels on.Chris put in a reasonable performance as our 3rd counter(if not a little cautious ?) before heading off to Nepal directly after the race. There was a small gap in the field before a splurge of Westies appear in quick succession with a rare performance by JD And even rarer by Dave R !I notice Steffen nearly got his bum felt on the line by Hamilton who put his first points on the board.

Elsie easily gubbed the other Wummin Ana & Clare to take her points total back into contention but will she stick around for the next race ??

If Drew was going the wrong way as has been suggested ,the Baxter must having been showing him the way. That's the only explanation i can think of for him being so far back (well ,other than being fat and unfit)

Next up is the dreaded (by me anyway) Clachnabentankles in the lovely heathery ,heathery more bloody heathery Angus glens. That's on 17th April so get it into your filofax.

    Well done folks.

note:there are some good photos on the Carnethy Web

First FV40 ya beauty!! Yes, in my first hill race as a vet I wasn't expecting to do particularly well, never mind win a prize!!Somehow though they missed me out at the prizegiving and I didn't have the heart to speak up. Nexy race mibbee?

Finally the Screel results have appeared. There appeared to be some kind of time keeping cock up where I finished in the field, but I have extrapolated (i think that's how you spell it?) the best I can. If you don,t believe me, look at the order of the midfield times (circa 36 to 37 min) in the Carnethy website! They are odd to say the least!

How ever I digress, the race was wickedly quick esp. for Jethro Lennox who won by a mile, but I can't really speak for what went on at the front or rear of the field, perhaps somebody else can fill those bits in. Midfield, JD made a spirited climb, followed by Steffen and yours truly who was struggling to keep Murdo at bay. At the top of the first climb I nipped past Steff and set off after JD who was by this time out of sight. As I reached the end of the ridge, Steff was still pretty close. Down in the woods it was great fun dodging the trees and roots. As we ascended the second time I could see JD not to far in fro,t deep in conversation with an errant Drew who had stumbled on a crafty short cut, but he had been rumbled! Another sneaky glance behind revealed that I had pulled a useful gap on Steff who in turn had been caught by Murdo. On the final descent I quickly overhauled JD, and Murdo caught and passed Steff.

Congrats to Ronnie, Nige and Chris who all had excellent runs up the sharp end of things and to all other Westies taking part. How about some tales of jousting from other parts of the field?

See you at the Shettleston ton run.
