Chapelgill

Only 2 Westies turned up at Chapelgill this year, (for the senior race that is), i.e. me and Murdo, a Chapelgill regular. Which is hardly surprising given the weather conditions. Approximately 15 hardy souls lined up for the start, and there was no need for Robin to tell the runners to carry full body cover, they were all wearing it! I led the race for about the first 10m, until three runners sneaked by. I quickly past the last of the three, to get myself into third position, a quick glance behind revealing that Murdo had slotted into fifth position. This was the way the positions remained all the way to the top. Halfway up, we got hit by horizontal sleet, and it was easier to progress uphill doing the crawl rather than being upright! The small cairn at the top was a welcome sight, I was fully clothed and I felt as if another couple of minutes and I would be an exposure case! I'm sure all the other runners felt the same. I descended like a big Jessie (nothing new there then!), but by some miracle was catching the second place runner, some guy from Moorfoot runners, but not enough to catch him by the finish. The race was won by a junior from Edinburgh who didn't hang around to collect his prize. Murdo had a good descent to get fourth place. The naff conditions meant that the prize giving was a very hurried affair, almost like a drive through prize giving, as people didn't want to get out their cars!

See you all at Screel for those vital Westies points!

Cheers,
