Chapelgill Junior Race

By Westies newest member,

Victoria Reid (age 13).

The weather conditions at Chapelgill on the 20th march were probably really to blame for the lack of runners. It was organised by Martin Hyman, and the usual plethora of Lothian runners were there. It was a wild day, with high-speed winds and heavy rain, although that only really started for the senior's race (Luckily enough for me!). Just as the junior race was about to go underway, two more participants arrived, looking for a run. So that briefly postponed the start. However, it soon got off to a wind battling start with two Lothian runners steaming off in to the lead. However they soon stopped their sprinting antics halfway up the steep incline. I was just behind these two runners, breaking the wind for the other competitors. The course for the junior race is fairly straightforward. A quick dash up a steep, yet small hill, then round a loop at the top, which is very flat & very boggy, then right back down.

The winner was the same as last year, a young boy from Lothian, followed by a girl from Lothian, then myself. I was very pleased with performance. I had got the same place as last year, but I beat my time for last year by about 15secs. That was all I really expected to do, considering the conditions. My younger brother Fraser, (another new Westies member - age 8) was also competing, and managed a lucky fifth place. I say lucky because the boy in front of him was quickly pulling away, and getting closer to the finish line, with my little brother on his heels. However, about ten feet from the finish line the little boy tripped up! So my little brother sprinted past to scoop fifth place. The little boy quickly picked himself up and finished sixth.

See you all at Screel
