University Road Race
Just noticed that the Uni Road Race was run on what we (if not Americans) call 9/11! The event was made all the spicier by the presence of 2 large Sikhs with well dodgy beards and for all I know lots of potent gear strapped round their midriffs.
Well, to the race. A brilliant cool Nov day and a grand turnout even if Matt preferred to work, at least his nemesis Gibby (he of the dodgy tea-cosy bobble hat) was there and indeed the first Westy home. I had a quite good run, my best time for several years (just over 35 mins) and took the (remaining) scalp of my old mate Sandy McNeill, who briefly caught me at the top of the Cleveden hill but had forgotten that that was no longer a mile from the finish as it was when he last ran the race!! Dave Calder continues his comeback; Drew now has 27 consecutive Uni Road Races in the bag; Helen was the only Westy Wummin to finish; I just beat one of those grizzled Harryer vets; the bananas were yummy and the results service on the Web amazingly prompt (6hours?!).
2 questions remain: what happened to Archie? wrong turning? and who was that odd geezer cheering me on as I crossed the canal for the second time? I'm sure I remember him from somewhere??

(Full marks to Graeme for getting earlier to press with his concise and erudite report).
Westies hillbillies lost all sense of reason this week with an outrageous suggestion that Tinto should be included in the Winter League, apparently in conjunction with the University Road Race. In an attempt to increase the complexity of the already opaque scoring system, a nightmare scenario was suggested which would result in the adjudicators having to compare Dick Wall’s masterful and terrifying descent of Symington’s finest peak with Graeme Orr’s equally masterful and terrifying sprint up Cleveden’s finest mountain. Dick could well pick up extra points for artistic merit, but Graeme’s technical performance would surely also be worthy of bonus points. What next? Westies members will want appearance points for sitting through the post-Tinto SHR AGM without falling asleep? And after that? Well, I can just see Mark wanting his performance in the Auchenshoogle Half-marathon included in Manny’s Hillracing league just because it clashes with Glamaig. Hand me the paracetemol!!!!
Anyway, enough of that nonsense and on to the race, held in fine autumnal conditions. Mark’s absence, due to work commitments was met with glee by both Archie and Gibson, who both fancied their chances at climbing up the league table. Similarly, Helen took advantage of Chris’s groin strain to take full points in the women’s league (she being the only wumman taking part).
And so, Gibson was first Westie in, apparently a full half-minute ahead of Archie. However, it looks as if Archie forgot the brown envelope this time as his performance is not included in the official results. He claims a time of 32 ½ minutes, but who can verify this? A further half minute behind, a battle was raging between Brian Edridge and Dave, with the latter’s devastating pace in the last 200 metres making the difference. Next in was Graeme Orr, thanks to his devastating pace up Cleveden (and complete with home-made Westies vest), followed shortly afterwards with a rare appearance by Sandy McNeil, whom we reckon was last seen at Cort-ma-Law?. Ian Struthers was close beheind, having blasted past both Drew and Helen during the course of the race. Helen was still complaining about the effects of the Karrimor two weeks ago, whilst for Drew this was remarkably his 27th (or is it 28th?) outing in a row at this race.
Results mean that Gibson has moved to the top slot in the men’s league, whilst Archie has also crept up to 4th position. Helen’s run has also moved her to second equal in the women’s league.
Next league race is in 2 weeks at Braid Hills in Edinburgh…..unless this clashes with the Countryside Alliance jumble sale and egg-and-spoon race at Biggar!
