Croftamie

Westies Road Race Handicap, Croftamie , Wednesday 28th August 2002

17 Westies turned out for the annual race round the back roads of Croftamie. It was a closely fought race and all runners were closely grouped towards the finish, as you will see with the finish times. The distance was 7.8 miles and included a couple of miles of rough track and a couple of gates to negotiate before the road section began.

Weather conditions were perhaps not ideal to begin, with high humidity. However the weather greeted the runners with cool drizzle towards the finish and a stiff cool breeze. Last year's runner up John Donnelly turned up hoping to make it a two wins in three years and fought all the way to beat Graeme Orr by around 14 seconds in 64.50. The men's fastest actual time was Mark with 48.10.

First female over the line was Helen who held off Blair in a time of 67.13. Muffy had the fastest actual time of 57.26. Liz put in a respectable run at 63.56 but her handicap time of 72.56 made her last runner over the line in 17th place and won the wooden spoon respectively.

I heard John briefly boasting about making it 3 in a row but now that the rumour is out I am sure a few of us will be doing some hard winter training to ensure that does not happen!!
