Glasgow to Edinburgh Relay

They said it wouldn't be exciting, competitive, or fun to watch - how can there be competition "in house"? - but at the end of the day, those sizzling Williams sisters kept us on the edge of our seats. Bla de blah. Yawn.

Oh, that other sporting event? Well, to the mystification and perhaps indifference of good Falkirk burghers walking their dugs (a "Westy" is a West Highland terrier in these parts), and sundry bikers, four teams battled it out (or did they? these Boggies are a bit incestuous, like Venus and Sereenus) from Port Dundas to Port Hamilton in Edinburry.

However, I think I should start with a medical report. Jane's back and Mark's ankle healed miraculously in time for the race, but Cap'n Charlie's missing pinkie (WE WANT PHOTOGRAPHIC PROOF!!) failed to make the starting line, as indeed did Manny's festering blister. All we have to nurse now are bruised egos......but hey! we finished 4th, and were 3rd till nearly-the-start of the final leg. Most meritorious was Mark's amazing second leg, the fastest of the four, which kept us third for most of the race. The weather was cloudy - probably just as well, as Friday's heat might have knocked out some runners.

So here are the splits for each leg:

Leg 1: Jon Slow: 4th in 46.57;

Leg 2, Mark 3rd (but fastest) in 28.48;

Leg 3, Archie in 50.37;

Leg 4, Drew in 37.00;

Leg 5, Blair in 70.21;

Leg 6, Steve in 49.02;

Leg 7, Jane in 53.03;

and last and indeed least, I brought home the Westy wooden spoon / baton in 59.34.

We had some moments of panic, like when Margaret (Mrs Drew) vanished off to the Union Inn at the end of Drew's leg and when Jane's train to Linlithgow was cancelled. But we finished a team and they might repeat the event!
