Round Arran Relay

Unlucky for some, 13 Westies runners travelled to Arran on 23 August to compete in the Round Arran Relay. We were able to put out a Women's and Men's team and still had Pete Baxter available to realise a lifetime dream by joining with some big-buxomed, blonde bimbettes in a team misnamed as the Go-go Girls. Stop-go Girlies would have been more appropriate! Each team of 6 was split into two groups of three. One group of three headed north around the island from Blackwaterfoot to Brodick whilst the other ran south to/from the same destinations. Although on road, the distances and climbs of between 8 and 12 miles with 600 foot ascents ensured all the stages were challenging.

Performance of the day went to Jane Robertson, who took the fastest ladies prize on the 3rd stage north through Corrie to Brodick. However her reward for this (was it a mug?) seemed somewhat less attractive than the fancy

cosmetics set which Jane Saul (Tracey's pal who volunteered to race the night before) won in a spot prize. The Women's team took 2nd place, only 18 seconds ahead of Kilmarnock, pretty close in the overall time of over 7

hours.

In the Men's race, Westies lost out to 5th place by an even closer margin; only 5 seconds separated them and Irvine 'B' team. Archie ran well on the same stage as Jane and was quite pleased with himself until it was pointed out to him that the guy sho finished ahead of him seemed to be a chain smoker!

A good day out in fine weather was finished off with a visit to Duncan's Bar, the runner's shrine in Brodick Bay, before heading back to Ardrossan.
