Dunbartonshire CC Championships
27/11/99
A good start to the Westies Cross Country League, with 12 runners competing in the Dunbartonshire Championships on Saturday 27th of November. The race was held in Clydebank on a two mile circuit which was reasonably undulating and unreasonably wet. Muffy gave up the chance to compete by offering to look after Damon's dog. Charlie's excuse was even more pathetic. Having been on a bender the night before, he forgot to point out that he had been resting up for the previous couple of days while he and his fellow Posties had been on unofficial strike. In any case, his drinking excuse sounded pretty hollow when Chris Menhenet turned up having been on a girlies night out until 2am that morning and had just completed 2 hours running in the Kilpatricks! Just to emphasise the point that running and binging are not incompatible, Chris then turned in an excellent performance, ending up 2nd in the Women's race in a time of 26:27. What was Charlie's response to that (No comment, I'm afraid)? Elsie and Pat completed the women's race in 6th and 8th positions to give Westies the team prize.
In the Men's 6 mile race, Mark went storming off at the start, with Damon not far behind. The race was eventually won by S Kerr of Kirkintilloch Olympians in 30:15; Mark was 3rd in 31:00 whilst Damon pulled through the ranks to finish 4th in 31:15. Brian was 17th in 34:17, well ahead of Dave in 24th position. This quartet ended up as 3rd team, narrowly pipped into 2nd by Vicky Park. Gibson Fleming, running his first race for 6 months finished just behind Dave, whilst Archie, wallowing in the mud, was unable to repeat his good Uni Road Race form of three weeks earlier. The most exciting finish of the day involved Don Reid and Chris Fuller, the latter making his Westies debut. With 100 metres to go, Chris was lying 10 metres ahead, but Don's experience and speed allowed him to sneak past (without Chris taking a wrong turning). Pete Baxter, suffering in the cold, damp conditions (serves him right for moving to the east coast where this type of climate is only occasional) competed the Westies contingent in 44th place.
