The Grim Gallop

9th January 2012

GrimOrr had requested a special birthday run to celebrate his 64th, so after a well-attended reps session, Westies old and new set off on part of the old GU Road Race circuit (aka Westies L27 Time Trial route).

Grim set a cracking pace down Great Western Rd and along Dorchester Ave, going through the mile marker in 7:11 and completing the circuit of just under 2 miles in under 15 mins including tackling Cleveden Hill. A fantastic effort - many happy returns!

Well, the arrival of Chris and Ellie's wean snatched my place in the spotlight! Huge thanks to my "minders" on the Grim Gartnavel Gallop, most especially Johnston Robot-Man, Gibby breathing down my neck over the first mile, and then Brian keeping me going up Cleveden Hill and to the finish with well-aimed(?) abuse.
The weird thing (as you'll all discover some day) is that you still feel you're flying flat out at 7 mins mile pace - even though I could reel off 26 of these some 27 yrs ago, on my last marathon race (Glasgow 85). That was Grim!

Well done Grim and Happy Birthday. As I reach the same milestone next month, I can echo your feelings about flying flat out at 7 mins mile pace; I thought I was travelling at the speed of sound down Tinto last year only to find that the rest of the field were in warp drive! I was at the top slightly in front of Brian who finished 51 places in front of me . . . . .it's hard to understand !

Well done Grim. Plenty fast enough old chap.

Grant - hope you recover from the pull and we get to see you again in a week or two ... easy does it.

Well done old Grimbo ......I'd apologise for the abuse but I know full well that any real Westies are heartened and encouraged by abuse and just get edgy when people are too nice to them ......the standard of abuse has been declining alarmingly in the club recently as the vast majority of people in the club are really nice people ......plus Manny lives a long way away...... well meant and cutting abuse is at the heart of this small but perfectly formed Glasgow running club and needs to be preserved and encouraged .......now that really is Grim.

Brian, I've never heard such arrant nonsense as the c**p you mention above, you ugly old git! I think you are well in keeping with the rest of Westies; a more horrible, brutal, unfriendly and undesirable bunch of non-athletic yobs you could never hope to meet!

There now, I hope you all feel suitably heartened and encouraged :-)

Happy (belated) Birthday Grim! I've got a rain maker here I'd be delighted to give to you as a present, it definitely works and could be responsible for record rainfalls in Oz last year! Enjoy your 7 min mile-ing for many years to come!
