Kelvinhall 3,000m

Event details

I've just run my first ever track race, 3,000 metres at the Kelvinhall indoor track.

My plan was to run at just under 40 seconds per lap, which worked for about the first 5 laps, but then I faded a fraction and was caught by Louisa Stewart and Denis Williams. I tagged behind them for a while, but could feel the pace dropping, so eventually Denis took the lead, and stuck to his shoulder until halfway around the final lap when I kicked with my final effort. My watch time was 10:04, so I just missed my sub-10min target, but enjoyed the event all the same.

Great stuff Chris, good to see Westies represented on the track once again. I gather that Archie Cameron, Dave Calder and others used to partake of this sort of thing many years ago, but it seems to have fallen out of the club's repertoire until now.

Thanks for the event link - strangely, I had been thinking about trying one of these Glasgow Athletics meets at some point. A colleague mentioned it a few months ago. I think Murray Strain won an outdoor 5,000m in the autumn.

Very close to Niall's target time for the Big 8 although I'm not sure that a 3,000m rather than a road 3k would have counted. Nevertheless, well done!

Thanks Johnston. Also worth noting was Fiona Matheson setting a new world record time of 9:56 for the F50 age category.

Yeah, I saw the GAA tweet. Amazing stuff - her first indoor run too, which perhaps explains her ultra-conservative D-group start when she could easily have joined the Cs.

Yeah, I've no idea why she was in the D race. I expect she could have gone even faster in the Cs.
