West District XCs, Irvine
10th December 2011
Another good turnout of running and cheering Westies for the annual mudfest in less-than-lovely Irvine. As expected, Shettleston and Inverclyde battled it out at the sharp end of the men's race, while Niall and Tom fought for Westies supremacy. Niall took it on the final hill and held on until the line. JD started well but was pole-axed by a stitch, but such is the man's form these days that he was still way ahead of most of us. Chris was in the mix with the fast guys, so they were our 4 counters. (Edit - sorry, it's 6 to count, so that includes me, for which I must also apologise!)
James ran his first ever race (not just his first in Westies colours), and showed the speed that was immediately apparent when he first arrived for reps. With his lack of race practice he faded a little, but I could never get the gap to much under 10 seconds and I didn't have a chance in the closing dash. However, I did clock a PB of almost 2 mins, building on my foundation of long runs, speedwork, and tapering down by offering to marshall in midweek.
Next in for the men was Tony, whose partner Katy was an extremely vocal supporter from her mid-course position and definitely pushed the Westies men to the max. Ciaran, Don and Peter were all close, with Peter continuing to improve and getting ever-closer to the guys ahead. Gibson got ahead of Bobby Young this time, and GrimOrr completed the Westies men's team. For once, John Quinn wasn't there, having been struck down by a lurgy.
The ladies were finishing just as I arrived, with Muffy, Pauline, Helen and Pat all enjoying(??) the Irvine mud. Jo had already finished her run - sorry I missed it!
Most notable feature of the day was the new Westies gazebo! A long-overdue purchase, it provided a meeting point, storage, and changing, plus a wee challenge in the assembly and re-packing stages. It's plain black for now, but in due course it will be adorned with a golden W or perhaps even the full Westerlands CCC. Truly, this is luxury.
P.S. Where was Steve Gray?

Great racing with the Westies today! Niall and I were pretty much stuck together throughout the race. Only a fall by Niall on lap two split us. As the two of us were battling it out not only each other but 3 Cambuslang runners I eased till he got back with me which I dont think hampered our progress as we were soon back on the Cambuslang runners (Greg Hastie is the only one I know). We passed Greg and progress was good. Still nothing between us as we climbed the hump for the last time and made for the line. Greg came steaming passed as I was making an effort to keep with Niall I was all out and the line was coming up quick but Niall had the edge. Great race.

Can I just add how much of a privilege it was to be at the inaugural unveiling of the John Quinn Commemorative Gazebo. Steve Gray and others take note – the Westies now do “luxury”.

Fantastic race yesterday in Irvine, I'm delighted to have beaten my time from last year by 10s (much dryer conditions last year, although the course was backwards this time, I don't know if that makes a difference) and been 7 places further up the field.
The race started with the usual fast and frantic pace, my plan was to set myself up in a good position in the first few hundred meters before settling into a more steady pace. John had a strong start and was about 20m ahead while Chris and Tom were right on my shoulder. As we settled down myself and Tom got in with a group of 3 Cambuslang runners. The pace was hard but just bearable (As discussed with Johnstone... this works out at 100% of my supposed max heart rate).
Near the start of the second lap we began pulling John back, I had guessed he was in trouble but hoped seeing the 2 westies W's he would be able to tag onto our group. I think however he was really struggling with a stitch and just couldn't hang on. About half way round the second lap I thought that one of the Cambuslang runners was struggling through the mud and decide I would attack out of the next corner to try drop him. I cut down the inside of the corner (trying to be a smart arse), slipped and ended up nearly taking the whole group down. For my trouble I got kicked in the head and spiked on my shins. I got up and had the usual rush of adrenalin. Tom made sure I was OK and just that slight slowing of the group meant that I was able to hang on (Thanks Tom).
Onto the 3rd lap and I was still feeling OK, Somebody said 38th to me which gave me a boast because I came 43 last year. I don't really remember much of the lap... just that I took it easy on the corner I had fallen on. Up the last hill I was pushing hard on Toms shoulder. I attacked as hard as I could on the flat bit and then tried to hold my speed down the other side. Then it was just 200m of mud to the finish, my legs were screaming but I keep going and was disappointed to loose a place to one of the Cambuslang runners (Greg). However overall I'm very happy and looking forward to more battles with Tom and hopefully John and Chris.
On another note, the support from the Westies ladies was fantastic today. There was no point of the course where I didn't have somebody shouting common westies or go Niall... Thanks again... it does make a difference!

I want to echo what Niall has said about the support and also what a brilliant race this is. It'd be great to see even more Westies at the cross-country races. They're entirely off-road, Inov8-friendly, muddy, challenging (most of the top hill runners are there), exciting, and most of all they're a great chance to get out and enjoy a day with your team-mates who you'll see more often than in most hill races due to the compact courses. An excellent workout in the winter season...and of course we are Westerlands Cross Country Club!!

My short-lived status as Westy's oldest active runner was well and truly blown out the muddy water by the return of the evergreen Gibby (ever-yellow, indeed). That 65+ phenomenon completed his race a good 5 minutes ahead of me - although after a lap I was still a mere 150 or so yards adrift. The third lap was a real test of endurance, and I was further demoralised by losing 2 places. Still, 50 minutes is not too bad, considering that was my time on the Glasgow 10k road race in September. I chickened out of repeating my barefoot last lap - just too cold and muddy/slippery.
I hope the Westy Gazebo survived its baptism, but regret that we didn't try a group photo inside its wee frame. With a turnout of almost 20 runners, it might have looked like a phone-box cramming stunt!

Ladies team was 15th while the Vets team was 6th and we're all over 50. How good is that!

really enjoyed my first full distance x-c for a while,I see that the East Districts results were reported in five year age groups and even the north districts had an M50 category a pity the West could not do the same.

Well done folks at putting out our best ever (?) participation and performance at the West Districts! We had the added bonus of the gazebo for shelter and bag stowage, although one of the legs is now mangled after its first outing.

Hopefully some massage and physio work will see the gazebo's leg ok in time for the next race. I trust there were no other injuries on the day?

I forgot to mention in my post... For those that were interested, having one luminous green and one black shoe is about 1s faster per mile... but I'm not sure how much of the effect was removed by both my shoes being a mucky brown colour after the warm up.

Great turnout for the WD's, even if I do take exception to my home toon being described as less-than-lovely (have you been to Barrhead, that's even lesser-than-lovelier as Grim can possibly confirm). I guess we may have had this kind of turnout years ago but certainly not recently.
I like the idea of a black gazebo...can we hire it out for funeral wakes?

(Proof that ex-Westies canny hack it) I met Marc McColl outside the Shetts marquee - which could house 6 westy gazebos. Asked how he'd got on. "OK...aw, ah dropped out!" Ya big girl's blouse!
We could also use Oscar the Dober to defend the gazebo against all comers - and maybe buckle the other three legs in the process?
