Glasgow Uni Road Race
A modest turnout (187 finishers) for this much-altered annual fixture, perhaps on account of its being rescheduled from its usual November slot and the resultant colder and wetter conditions. However, the rain held off long enough for 9 Westies (5 men, one Grim, and 3 women) starters, who formed into two bunches over the course: around the 33 minute mark and around 40 minutes. Jon Slowe, in a welcome return to Westy duty, was in a class of his own, breaking the 30 minute barrier (24th in 29m42),followed by Ciaran, John Quinn, and Don all within a minute at the finish. Meanwhile a grand tussle was in progress towards the back: Joane McGuire leading, while Archie, Pauline, Helen and I followed, swopping places at various stages. While I succeeded in my pre-race challenge to Archie ("I'll get ye!"), I was sneakily nailed in the finishing straight by the indomitable Pauline, with Helen in close attendance. (Memo to Dave Calder - if you're reading this Dave, yes, I sometimes do get "pulled" by Westy wummin. It's called "slipstreaming" - mainly slip in my case). Notable legends within a minute or so of our rearguard group: Dave Logue in 38.28, and Doug Gunstone in 39.01.
Selected results:
1st male: Tom Fay (Shetts) 25m14
8th Tom Smith 28m13

A tough day for racing with the prospect of poor weather and I was fairly unenthusiastic about the race ahead, however, I enjoyed it and felt much stronger than I did last year. According to the results I was 1 sec faster this weekend, although we started further down the hill this year so the route was a little bit longer.
Overall a great performance by all and in the words of JQ I was spurred on by having my "fanclub" throughout!

Tom and I decided to give this one a whirl, so after arriving and registering in the (only) sunny interval of the day we returned to the car battling horizontal hail stones. At least another 10 minutes was spent sitting in the car, each of us wondering who's bright idea this had been..... However we decided to brave he elements and headed off for a warm up, combined with a bit of a recce of the route. Maybe we are not educated enough to cope with the demands of navigating our way through a University Campus, as at 13.40pm, we were going round in circles, getting wetter and muddier by the minute and wondering where on earth we had come from. At 13.50pm, Tom spotted some marshals and sprinted after them to try to find out how we got back to the start. At this point I had given up hope and more or less resigned myself to holding Tom's stuff whilst he put an effort in to get back to the start line, however, with a sneaky shortcut and some advice from the marshals we made it with perhaps a minute to spare. Tom later informed me that it had been a good pace for his warm up, I, on the other hand arrived on the start line as pink as a lobster and hardly able to speak. After the initial drama it turned out to be a good race, the warm- up must have set Tom up for a good run and despite thinking I wouldn't like laps, I found it all very comforting, at least I knew where I was going! Well done to all the Westies who took part and the much appreciated support and encouragement en-route!
