Tinto HR 2011
12th November 2011
What a glorious sunny day! Those who lifted their eyes from the rock-strewn ground at the enormous cairn were treated to fabulous views over South Lanarkshire, then it was full-on concentration again for the helter-skelter descent.
The kit checks were fierce this year - gloves and all. Worth noting for future, and hard to disagree with in November. I was pleased to see a sign at the hall in Symington saying that three-quarter length tights did not constitute full body cover - using safety as an excuse to avoid a fashion disaster seems fair to me!
Prasad was leading by a huge margin on the way down and went on to win in the 11th-fastest time ever. Second place looked less certain as Al Anthony was being pursued by a pack of snarling Carnethys, but Al held on.
Alan Gilkison was first Westie by a good distance, clocking in around 37 mins. Next was JD, putting Brennan firmly back in his box and rolling back the years (well, a bit!) in the 43 min zone. I thought Don Reid was ahead of me all the way, but he arrived beside me just as the downhill gradient slackened off, complaining that it was a bad day, then promptly shot off towards the line with me trying desperately to cling on and not to drop any other places. We finished in just over 44 mins, Don keeping the advantage and pulling me along to a 7-min PB. (I've recorded around 30:30 for the ascent and 13:43 for the descent.)
John Quinn translated his excellent road and XC form to the hills, arriving soon after, and benefitting from a conservative start and consistent climb (and not using his face as a brake this year) to claim a big PB too. Brian Brennan was next, pre-race ebullience and banter now at a peep - or at least just moderate volume. Malcom Evans, John Hamer, and Ros Evans (1st FV60) were also flying the Westies flag, and Tinto saw a very welcome return for club stalwart Graham Benny. (Have I missed anyone?)
A huge thanks to Drew and Captainess Paula for support, despite gammy knees and JD's Polish Mountain 'Flu. I'm not aware of any Westies injuries this year and it seemed like everyone had a grand day out.
Westies results and times:
25 Alan Gilkison 37:02
103 John Donnelly 43:56
111 Don Reid 44:10
112 Johnston Orr 44:10
122 John Quinn 44:45
125 Brian Brennan 45:00
176 Malcolm Evans 48:55
180 John Hamer 49:17
202 Ros Evans 50:45
259 Graham Benny 68:37

Very benign conditions for Tinto this year - managed to run it only wearing a vest - pretty unusual for a mid November hill race.
A night shift on Thur had completely taken any spring out of my legs and i knew i was in trouble from the start as 75% of the field got in front of me. I could see Mr Quinn and Brian just ahead on the final pull to the top but my legs just felt like lead. Managed to pass Brian as we stumbled round the summit cairn and set off after John. I caught John just before the traverse and a few minutes later caught sight of Johnston way in front. A bit of determined descending saw me catch him as the gradient eased off. I considered just sitting in until the final 100m but then Johnston sneaked a cursory glance over his shoulder and the race was on. Had to dig in hard to keep him at bay, and all the time the two of us were bearing down on JD fast. Another 1/2 mile and we would have all been together! Great fun - one of the great classic descents in Scottish hill running. Well done to all Westies who took part.

Got to the top of a hill ahead of Don. Still buzzing.
I took Johnstons advice and took it really easy in the 1st quarter of the ascent and it paid off as I felt great all the way up. Recurring dreams of a hill victory over Don were now actually within my grasp as I turned at the summit cairn and tentatively looked back. No sign of him.... Could it be finally happening.
I started my descent thinking all I had to do was stay upright be sensible and victory would be mine. Naw!! Don had other ideas. He passed me before I even got a good downhill stride going. Stormed past me like a man possessed. What a descender!!!!
I dug in and managed to stay reasonably close to him all the way down without ever getting close enough.
I managed a PB and live to get gubbed another day.
A brilliant days racing and a good Westie turnout.
PS Only managed to pass the kit inspection by fashioning a hat from a pair of underpants I luckily had in my bag.
So glad I didn't need to wear them, Brian Brennan would have annihilated me.

Another enjoyable Tinto outing although I only noticed afterwards that I had cut both hands on the barbed wire fence near the start. I much preferred it when the fence was lower and a wee hurdle could see you over!
Felt pretty good this year and turned in a reasonable position before gaining 5 places on the way down. However, I couldn't keep-up with Gary Fraser who turned at the same time and made up 11 places. He made my descending look pedestrian.
I think I may have crushed the chap behind me in the gate in my haste to get through. He seemed okay at the finish but I heard a bit of a thud at the time.
Excellent Westie turnout and great support at the fence and the summit.

Well done to all. I had a terrible ascent, no apparent reason, but was passed by loads of people I've been regularly beating this year ......que sera sera. I must have been 3 minutes behind JD at the top and tried to keep up with Don on the descent.....reader I failed, the domed one was smoking downhill..... but I still had a great descent and might even have caught JQ if he hadn't got a fresh injection of adrenaline when he saw me as he was going through the gate. Good weather, reasonable westies turnout, and nobody injured......result.

Probably the best weather conditions I have encountered at Tinto although the mud was as bad as I have seen it before. It was great to get a chance to have a blether with loads of folk who I usually only get time for a quick hello with at the top of a hill or out on marshalling duty.
I started at the back of the field and in spite of encouragement (or was it abuse) from Drew at the gate and Elma higher up I was plumb last by about 20m at the start of the climbing. However most of the runners in front of me had normal trainers on so I fancied my chances of getting past some of them where grip was an issue. I managed to reel in about half a dozen of the backmarkers on the way up to the cairn including one woman who passed and repassed me several times. She was right behind me coming away from the cairn but on the first steep and slippy section I heard a Jimmy Saville impersonation behind me and guessed that was the last I would see of her. Claimed another scalp on the way down and had another in my sights near the foot of the hill but once on to the flatter path my gravitational advantage disappeared.
Happy with my time even though it was 2 minutes slower than 2 years ago but the main result is that 3 days on from the race my arthritic knees are showing no sign of any reaction.
So the cautious comeback can continue!
