Allan Scally Relay

Results | Photos | Route on Garmin

The 7th relay in 6 weekends for Westies. Don ran the first leg in 31:06, followed by John Quinn who ran the exact same time on Leg 2. Whilst I was waiting for Ciaran to complete Leg 3, the remaining 6 or 7 runners were gathered for a mass start. Then Ciaran suddenly appeared so I got a small headstart on the mass start. I caught 5 or 6, but was mainly running on my own in torrential rain towards the end. Matthew White of Dundee passed after a couple of kilometres, but I more or less kept him in sight for the rest of the stage to finish in 28:20.

Shettleston won overall by more than 4 minutes, and Glasgow Uni were first women's team.

Westies team:
1. Don Reid, 31:06
2. John Quinn, 31:06
3. Ciaran McDonald, 32:15
4. Chris Upson, 28:20

Following a week and a half nursing a calf injury I was really pleased to complete my leg intact and with a PB by 6 seconds. Ciarans was the westie time of the day as he knocked 2 minutes off his time from last year. The fact that a group of young female Glasgow uni girls were screaming his name as he sprinted home probably helped to reduce his time even further.
Another enjoyable relay even in the teaming rain. Got to use Chris's camera and was quite proud of the pan shot of Chris coming home in mid stride with the blurred background.

I thought the background was blurred because Chris was running so fast!

Good to hear that your calf injury has cleared up, JQ. At least you've got your photography skills to fall back on if you find yourself out of action for a while.

JQ and fellow Westies, I hope to secure the Glasgow groupies for several upcoming races. This should hopefully reduce my time further.

Hey, what about these orange shoes that Chris is wearing??? Has he been taking fashion tips from Grimorr? I'm surprised that, wearing such fashionable attire, he managed to get along the old Edinburgh Road without being mugged by some Baillieston bampot!
Ciaran, tell us what the groupies had to say about them?

Identical times, Don and JQ, your lunchtime training obviously works well for you! How does the new course compare to the original?

I'm gutted I'm missing all these relay and cross country races, so it's great to read about them in the race reports. Keep up the good performances Westies!!

Sorry to have wimped out of cheering on the team on a wet day. It's too bad that the course has changed in the last year or 3, which makes Nat Muir's unbelievable record unassailable. Was he being chased by a Bar-L breakout?
Another grand road relay tradition - the E to G relay, for which the "Scally" was the testing-ground - is alas no more due to traffic, policing costs, and other constraints. Some amazing leg times and tussles between East and West-based teams (and the occasional guest teams from outside Scotland) are now a memory to be relived on cobbled together nostalgic websites. the other remarkable coincidence with JQ and myself (apart from both being bald and babe magnets!) is that we both appeared to have finished our legs a similiar distance in front of the shettleston ladies
