Atkins 3k On the Green
This was my 3rd 3k On the Green, 2nd in this series. Having finished 2nd behind Russell Wittington in the last series and 3rd behind Russell and Derek Govan in the first race of this series I was really hoping for a win this time around.
The race started and I took the lead for about the first kilometre but I was aware of another runner just behind me. It was Thomas McDonald of Bellahouston Harriers who took the lead from me. I followed along to just before the turn then decided to kick for a bit to get a lead.
I passed him but then he came with me matching my pace so I kept the speed up for longer than planned. He was still hot on my heels so I eased off then he passed me again and settled just in front at the same pace as me.
I followed for a bit then decided to kick again and once again took the lead but he followed again. Once again I slowed a bit and he overtook. He started to build a bit of a lead (about 10 metres) but I figured I'd hang back and try and get him in a sprint finish.
I waited until about 50 metres to go and really went for it pulling the distance to about 1 metre with about 20 metres to go. We were both going flat out as we passed a couple of women walking with a pram who gasped in amazement at the epic battle for 1st place :-) Unfortunately it wasn't to be my win again and I came in at 9:41 with Thomas winning in 9:40.
The competition was great though and helped me along to a PB by 11 seconds. I believe my 2nd place in this one and my 3rd place in the previous race means I can take the series if I get a similar result in the final race next month. I'm really hoping I can get 1st place in the next one though. Another 4 weeks of reps and cross country should hopefully help with that. Maybe some lighter trainers as well :-)

Well done John, that sounded like an epic battle, and an incredibly fast time. You must have kept Thomas on his toes right to the line.

Thanks Chris, yeah I think we did each other a favour in that race, neither of us were for giving up 1st place without a fight. It's weird as it didn't feel that fast so I was pretty shocked at knocking 11 seconds off my PB. I reckon there's still room for improvement as well though - more reps, more kettle bells and staying injury and illness free should hopefully get me under 9:40 next month.

Wow, what a finish. That 1st place is yours for the taking.
The hard work is certainly paying of.

Incidentally, why is Ciaran's flatmate Steve Gray running for Arbroath Footers?! He's no longer GUHH, he stays with a Westie, so.....Ciaran - sort this out!
