Well done Chris and his team for a cracking race in support of a great website - Scottish Hill Racing. I set off completely knackered after virtually no sleep courtesy of Dunblane Cathedral bells and a bloody 4x4 with a random faulty alarm parked next to our campervan!...oh, that and too much to drink at the Ochils 21st birthday bash!
My plan was simple - get round and see the course...ha ha! The first 2 miles to Tilly met this plan and I was jogging miles down the field with Don shouting abuse at me for going too slow. I had a Grim shout of encouragement at the foot of the first big climb and rapidly started to pull in lots of places of those who had set off far too fast. Both Chris & Alan went behind me as I pegged my way up the pack, but still feeling crap and wanting to sleep. As the hill levelled out nearer the top the places were more spread out and I had to start trying a bit so as to close the gaps after each overtake. By the time I got to Andrew Gannel Hill I had settled into a spot behind old Aidrian Davies, cute Catriona Buchanan and some filthy Trotter. We played cat and mouse over AGHill and then over to the Cleuch where JD was clicking away with his camera, but must have been freezing. Then the racing really started! Catriona was quickly dropped on the first big descent then short climb over Ben Ever, then Aidy and I started to dare each other to go faster on the big grassy drop to the track. A blistering pace saw us take 2 or 3 places as we tried to get the better of each other with no quarter given either way. The track was hellish, trying to stride out but smoke from my right gutty warned of an impending blister and the pain level soon soared! Still charge on, another place whizzed past us. One step between us, we dropped at a reckless pace, cutting the zig-zags and going into the final wood section at flat-out to cheers from the spectators. My blister pain was now maxing out but as we dodged the low pipeline and Brenda and Maisy flashed by, it was an all out sprint down the last 100 yards to the bridge to cheers from the finishing line, but to no avail for me. Aidy stayed a frustrating single step in front and we both chuckled between gasps for air. I've not had a run-in like that for a few years! My legs have been in pain ever since which usually only happens after a Ben race effort! A superb route and Chris hinted at the possiblity of avoiding the horrible track section by adding in a final short climb over the Nebit to allow an all-grass, very fast descent for next year. Well done guys, runners & marshalls, for a superb day out and of course tea and soup afterwards in a good pub! Westies!!!!

I can almost feel the throbbing pain reading your report, Manny! But of course you have the good fortune of having muscles, tendons, bones, skin and sundry body parts that seem to be unconnected via the nerve system to your brain and therefore no feedback messages telling you when to stop! Lucky beggar! Great racing though; that's what it's all about, even if you did get scalped...there's always a next time.

Yes, i confess i did hurl mild abuse at Manny for being only 2 places in front of me after 1/2 a mile of running, but it clearly had the desired affect as he quickly disappeared shortly afterwards. I was going ok, even getting passed Gordon Pryde on the first steep climb but kinda ran out of steam near Gannel and started to haemorhage places until i passed JD at the last marshalling point.
Reeled in about 10 places on the descent, which was rwally enjoyable but it was too little to late.
    Great afternoon.
PS What happened to Johnston - I was expecting him to catch me - or was he kidnapped by aliens or Ochil pixies?

Yes indeed, thanks to Chris and his team for organising a great race. Excellent route and I thoroughly enjoyed it. No danger of catching Don but I was heading for a healthy PB before I was very suddenly kidnapped by aliens at the foot of Ben Ever. Still a grand day out though.
