West District CC Relay Drumpellier Park

Drizzle, Glaur, Mist, Insect Bites & Dog Poo, I love the cross country season, why wouldn't you. 11 westies making up two male teams and one ladies team ran yesterday on a, for the most part flat but tough due to the muddy underfoot conditions, course. I warmed up with my new training partner Oscar, JD2's horse who really put me through my pre race paces and if it was allowed would have been a real asset during the actual race.

The ladies set off first with Pauline on first leg who ran a strong race as usual with a fast finish on the downhill home straight followed by Helen then Pat.

I ran in team A following on from Chris and JD2 with Niall on the anchor leg. I felt really under pressure to perform but was pleased with my run clocking a 15:58 for the 4K leg, but JD2 ran 14:03 which I think makes him the fastest Westie on the day. Team B ran a cracking race with Don on first leg then his mate Jim, Ciaran and Graeme on anchor who was welcomed over the line with an almighty Westie cheer.

Another successful Westie outing and can't wait for next week at Helensburgh.

Agreed JQ, that dug is massive! Should be devastating at the canicross. Good to see you're motoring again and it sounds like one of our faster men's teams in recent years.

Long journey for a short race for Pauline - stalwart service to the gold and black vest.

Just checked the race results and was delighted to see that I completed my leg in 0.00 minutes (well, it felt like I was scampering along!) What do you mean - they gave up clocking the stragglers?! I can attest that I was at my car, getting changed to drive home, and an old bloke was STILL completing his leg! Go, oldie, go.
PS note to JD2 - Oscar the Dober is a star. Let's get him a Westy bib, or waistcoat. He's great as a warm-up motivator.

Oscar had a ball, many thanks to the Westies that looked after him and used him for warmups. He's already made enquiries about the next curry night :-)

I really enjoyed the race and actually felt good the whole way round passing a fair few people like they were standing still, which gave me a boost each time. I even had enough left to sprint past Greenock Glenpark B on the finishing straight, spurred on by the Greenock Glenpark supporters shouting to their guy that he could hold me off :-)

The official results are here looks like I was actually 14:00. I think Niall may have been a bit faster but the 4th leg results are a bit of a mess at the moment so can't see 4th leg or overall time. Westies A managed 20th out of 47 and Westies B 41st.

Can't wait for the next few XC races, I've just got to get a few more tough reps sessions out the way this week first.

I'm not sure there's any Westies vests big enough for him :-)

Well done folks for turning out on such a dreich afternoon at Coatbridge! Highlights of the day included watching John Denovan storming past Stevie McLoone on the final corner, and seeing Ciaran's valiant attempt at not getting lapped by Matthew Gillespie of Shettleston. Hopefully SAL will have the corrected results online soon, but I wouldn't be surprised if JD2 had clocked the fastest Westie time of the day with 14:00.

They've just updated the results on the SAL website... Well done John on the fastest Westie time. My legs were feeling slow again on Saturday but hopefully the miles I'm putting in now will start paying off when the XC season starts getting serious in December. I started with a Bella runner to chase down and caught him after 1km. At roughly the same time a Garscube runner (Ben Melby) passed me and I tried to hang onto his shoulder for the next km before he dropped me. The 2nd half of the race was tough and I found it hard to keep my speed up. However I did manage to catch one more runner. In the distance I could see a potential 3rd pass but he was just too far in front and I ran out of time. It was a great XC day with plenty of mud to keep a Westie entertained and I'm glad to hear I wasn't the only one covered in insect bites afterwards.

    Bring on nationals

    Niall
