Ben Lomond Hill Race

Results

A good turnout of 14 Westies running at Ben Lomond. Shona was 2nd lady overall and took the 1st F40 prize.

Niall and I got off the hill just in time before the heavens opened, with thunder and lightening booming and flashing over the bedraggled runners finishing soaked to the skin. I didn't envy the marshalls too much, and heard that the last couple of runners were turned back before the summit.

The race had 2 new winners: Paul Faulkner and Sarah McCormack.

1. Paul Faulkner, M, 1:13: 43
9. Niall McAlinden, M, 1:22:09
10. Chris Upson, M40, 1:22:14
25. John Denovan, M, 1:26:27
33. Shona Robertson, F40, 1:28:27
49. Alasdair Duke, M, 1:33:34
58. Paula Cowan, F40, 1:36:39
68. Fraser Laird, M, 1:39:26
69. Brian Brennan, M50, 1:39:38
75. Jacques Penderis, M40, 1:41:25
82. John Quinn, M50, 1:44:20
84. Peter Grassl, M, 1:44:42
91. John Hamer, M40, 1:47:56
105. Helen MacPherson, F50, 1:53:12
107. Josie McGuire, F, 1:56:14

What a fantastic day! Well done to all the Westies who took part and thank you to all the marshalls who braved the thunder and rain on the hills and down below - it was good to see you all again, albeit briefly as I panted slowly past. The day started with the fun run for the kiddies, which they completed last year and were really looking forward to again this year (could it be the bribe of a kit-kat at the end?). The organisation and spirit of the event really enthused them again and this has become a must enter event for them. At least my kiddies improved on last year's times which is more than can be said for me - I am on a run of PW times after getting fat and lazy while off injured! Oh well, but it was still one of my most enjoyable days out so far this year and the BL is still my favourite hill race. See you all on the hills!

I think in my 16 years of marshalling BL we've had every type of weather but that was the most scary.
We decided to evacuate the summit (with MRT approval/encouragement) with 6 runners still to arrive and retreated to the relative safety of the wee dip on the ridge about 25 metres below and about 200 metres away from the top. We met 3 of the remaining runners on our way down and they continued to the summit at their own risk. In the dip we advised another runner to turn back but he carried on and fortunately returned as things got very dark and ominous. After a wee while we eventually abandoned that position as well to try and sweep everyone off the summit ridge with the MRT guy adding some authority to our actions. We turned back the last two runners but they would have got to the top OK in better weather - perhaps they should appear in the results with maybe 2 or 3 minutes added to their times.
There was also a Final Munro party going on at the summit for a couple of guys, one of whom was running the race (Andrew Hunter, Beeston AC). He had a quick glug of champagne and his photo taken before heading back down. Bizarre!
Good to see a bit of Westies ingenuity sorted out the potential problems introduced by the new gates.

Apologies to the Marshals that I was unable to thank them during the race due to feeling desperately unprepared and trying, in vain and at serious risk to my health, to catch Paula who I may never beat again given her new found speed. Well done to all Helpers in what was a great day out......managed to keep ahead of Jacques and Peter.....and John Quinn failed to bribe the organiser this time to move his finishing time up.....thanks Don.

Once the final runner had passed on the way down, and MRT had confirmed it, I made one of my fastest descents from Ben Lomond! Scary indeed! That aside, all seemed to go well, with runners and walkers co-existing peacefully.

Good turnout from Clan Penderis - looks like the youngsters are showing dad the way to go!

A sincere thanks again to the marshalls for volunteering in such dreadful weather. I hope no one suffered too many side effects of the cold wet weather. Hope Shona is feeling no side-effects of the grazed knee she gained on her quick descent.

See you all again next year, hopefully in better weather!

What a great day! The fork lightening i think has something to do with my new found speed as Brian put it! Never mind Brian we will keep battling it out at future races! (Just remember you are older than me!!!!!!!!!) The only thing about getting faster is that you feel you have to keep it up! It may not last long!!!
Thanks to all the marshalls for encouragement and support!
