S'no Fun
Actually, it was lots of fun. John and Paula were out for a bit of navigation practice for their impending Mountain Marathon debut, and I was tagging around for fun, pretending (unsuccessfully) that I knew a bit about hill navigation. We headed off to the top of Loch Lomond to meander round Meall an Fhudair (764m) using an old LAMM map with some controls shown on it. Once on the hill proper there was tons of snow, making progress slow but fun, gaining the ridge via a steep gully that provided some hairy few minutes as I kicked stepped my way up with my fell shoes. Once on top it was a case of cartoon cantering down deep snow covered slopes, finding innumerable deep hidden holes that on occasion almost swallowed us. A grand few hours, rounded off by mobile karaoke on the way home to John's classy CD of "Hits From The Pin Up Stars of the 70s and 80s".

Ah yes, the "hairy gully". JD and Paula prepared the way by kicking off most of the snow, leaving me with a stretch of smooth rock to scramble up. Did I lose confidence after sliding back down, twice? Yes, but the lack of any alternative route is a powerful inspiration, and on my third attempt I somehow dragged myself up, to rapturous, relieved applause (or not; I'm sure there must have been, but my memory fails me).
The descent was ridiculously enjoyable. We experimented with Paula's theory that if you run flat out over deep snow you won't sink in -- like when Wylie Coyote runs off a cliff and only starts to fall when he looks down.
All up, a great day out, serving an important reminder for how ill prepared I am for the HMM.
PS. Thank's for not mentioning my other CD, JD!

What a fantastic day out. The gully and deep snow descents were a challenge but great fun! Sadly my sinking theory did not seem to work as you can see from the pics!
The sing song in the car on the way home was enough to get us safely home...where did you get that CD JH??
