Scottish Masters Cross Country

A real cross country course for a change over at Kirkcaldy, Fife.

Mud, bog, hills, tussocks, etc.

8 Westies put in an appearance, with Shona, Pauline, Pat and Gibby all running in the women's 6km race, followed by myself, John Quinn, Don and GrimOrr in the men's 8km version.

Shona put in a great performance to finish 8th overall, and 6th F40, and Gibby managed 4th in the M65 finishing just behind Bobby Young of Clydesdale.

In the M40-M60 race the biggest talking point was of course John Quinn well and truly scalping Don Reid, finishing a good 7 places ahead. The Bellahouston 4k had clearly sharpened up JQ's act. I struggled around for 17th place and 5th M45, whilst GrimOrr managed a very respectable 14th position from last.

Summary, 6km race:
1. Angela Mudge, 23:12
8. Shona Robertson, 25:49
(4.) Gibson Fleming, 28:30
58. Pauline McAdam, 31:14
72. Pat McLaughlin, 36:13

8km race:
1. Robert Quinn, 31:03
17. Chris Upson, 34:15
113. John Quinn, 40:39
120. Don Reid, 41:06
187. Graeme Orr, 48:13

Ah yes, a real cross-country course after the soul-less Irvine "Moor" or dunes! Before the race, Ronnie Morrison (a Strathclyde contemporary of my Glasgow Uni H&H days) warned me that the course would be tough, following the heavy rain. Sure enough, as Chris' aerial photo almost shows, the start area was flooded, and I suspect the course was locally re-designed "on the hoof".
Lucky Gibby, with all those lassies to chase! What's more, no rain and a less strength-sapping shorter figure 8 course. I noted Pauline had a fine race, beating Debby the Boggie - no mean scalp! What was impressive was the number of over-65 men in the race. When I first ran the Vets, there was a solitary 75+ competitor - now there were several.
My fellow-superdupervets (60+), do not despair. I recall running at Irvine Moor when I had just turned 60, and only managing 8 minute mile pace over flat, dry grassland. Yesterday I was reduced to over 9-minute mile pace, and the last mile, returning from the outer loop, was a matter of Grim survival - nowt in the tank!
Mind you, John's and Don's times also dropped to 8 minute mile pace, which is slight consolation!

Scottish Masters Cross Country/Black Swan Event/Fun in the Glaur
(The Black Swan Theory or Theory of Black Swan Events is a metaphor that encapsulates the concept that The event is a surprise (to the observer) and has a major impact. After the fact, the event is rationalized by hindsight.)
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_swan_theory.

Latest Black Swan Event. Me passing Don in a cross country. It was oh so sweet. Almost as sweet as Dons pre race toasted teacake (which I am sure kicked in 1000m from the finish) or as sweet as John Hamers whirly twirly Ellies twirly whirly or JD's curly wurly (the correct version).
Great day ending with a curry and a few beers at Don and Elmas'.
Well done all who took part particularly Shona. What a run in the Glaur.

Was Gibby in the women's race because of his haute couture leggings?

Quite worried to see that Don has been scalped by JQ. Don was follicly challenged prior to kick-off, so JQ can't have helped there.

Great run John. Hopefully not just a black swan anomaly, but a sign of steady improvement! And good to see Shona back on form, competing near the top of the field.

What a mud fest Saturday was though not as mucky as the course at Kirkie a few years ago where the knee deep mud in places had a lovely mix of cow poo through it!
A rather over ambitious start and big dig on the hill on lap 2 found me floundering at the far end of the course and i would have been disappointed in John if he had not given me a coiffure for my school boy error. Must remember to keep my buns to myself in future!!
Still a great day out even if i did make an ass of it and a great run by Chris and Shona to get so far up the field

I grow tired of this cross country malarkie anyway - bring on the hills i say.

Don, a man who is tired of cross-country is surely tired of life....go and shoot yourself?

Great Westies turnout and some fab performances. How about changing the Black W on our vest to a Black Swan????
