Glasgow parkrun #104

8 January 2011

My third parkrun in the last month and still not on the proper course! The last two runs I blamed my hangover for the slow times. However, this time there was no excuse. I felt well preprared when I drove through the snow to Pollok park. With Chris Upson, Niall Mcalinden, Cat Miller, John Quinn and Myra Mcadam, there was a good Westies turnout. The route was again the 10 hill reps in the field next to the Burrell collection. My plan was to improve my PB and I started confidently. Rightaway, I felt this uncomfortable Monday buring in my legs. When I saw John Quinn quite a bit behind me, it dawned on me that I had started too quickly and indeed, during lap 4 John overtook me easily and disappeared into the far distance. Anyway, I managed to carry myself to the finish, although every second step I felt like I was slipping backwards on the snow. It also didn't help that Niall lapped me just before I started my last round. All this was forgotten once it was over and I felt good to have done it once more. I felt even better once I was back home watching the stars in Edinburgh on TV struggling with their own hill reps ...

In one way I got a PB at this week's Parkrun:
1st week - missed the start totally
2nd week - arrived just in time to sprint from the car straight into the 1st circuit (only made it because it was Christmas day and the roads were empty!)
3rd week - got there in time for a minute of shivering at the start line.
However, the organisers seem not to count this logistical PB and instead the results show a PW as I run slower each week getting lapped by Niall, Chris and many many more! Will consult Dr Nige and see what reps can do for this slothful state!!

My second parkrun and like Peter my intention was to improve on my first outing but was a minute slower. The conditions were no worse than my last run but an extended festive season (returning to work tomorrow) is my only excuse. I have just put my name down for the burdens after a gentle nudge from Don so the bevvy is now off limits. New year resolution :- less drink more sleep less telly more training. Nae Chance !
    Happy New Year To All

John, its time to get you over to the hills behind the hospital for some gratuitous hill reps at lunch time to work off the festive excesses me thinks.

Well done Peter, Cat, Niall and John. My 4th off-road Glasgow Parkrun in a row. Hopefully useful cross country training.
