Cold hands in the Leadhills

Three Westies (Paula Cowan, Graham Kelly and myself) took advantage of the "day after New Year" holiday to enjoy a run in the snowy Leadhills. Conditions were cold and misty, with intermittent periods of sleet, hail and freezing rain -- perfect for reminding us why we all love hill running. Despite the limited visibilty, Graham's excellent navigation skills kept us on track for a three and a half hour circuit encompassing six Donalds. The final couple of kilometers were a perfect demonstration of how heavy, wet snow can combine with wind chill to produce impressively cold hands. However, we were soon restored from being cold to mearly shivering by a late lunch of hot soup at the Welcome Inn services. An excellent day out enjoyed (in retrospect, at least) by all.

Yes thanks to graham for navigating and suggesting this route. A great run although dont think i have ever felt so cold at the end. Graham and i tried not to laugh at john as he tried several times to get the key in the car lock but to no avail! We had to wait till his hands defrosted! Thanks to John for driving this time.

Aye - conditions were challenging for sure !

We left Wanlockhead by the Southern Upland Way before a wee out and back to East Mount Lowther then along the icy road to Lowther hill itself and Green Lowther before disappearing down into the mist. The route continued over Peden Head, Dungrain Law, Dun Law, White Law and onto Louise Law.

With the weather getting worse, we dropped down to the lower ground following Lead Burn for a bit then onto the track up Glen Ea's Hill. The last wee road section from Leadhills village to the car was brutal with driving snow (but better than had we stayed on the high ground).

By the time we all thawed out we had covered 21.46km and around 1251m of ascent.

Many thanks to Paula & John for the company and indulging me in a wee exploration to the Lowther Hills.
