Glasgow parkrun #103

1st January 2011

Results

5 Westies welcomed the New Year with a muddy off-road parkrun, again using the field next to the Burrell for what was effectively a cross-country course. Chris did his usual 'hare' bit from the start, and finished second after Central AC junior Ross Milne put in a burst on the 4th one-kilometer lap. Clare Whitehead was the first lady home, and fifth overall. Next Westie was Ellie (16th), who aggravated her hamstring injury, but was still well clear of me (20th). Peter Grassl (29th) had been partying hard into the small hours but still managed a solid run, and Pauline's run (54th) was easy compared to the logistics of getting her result recorded after forgetting her barcode.

101 ran, a good turnout for the day.

The alternative parkrun route is really a disguised hill rep session. A good start to the New Year but will 2011 be the year of forgetting?
I wasn't too pleased when I realised that I'd made the effort to get to the parkrun only to forget my barcode. Then they said that if you'd forgotten your barcode but knew your number that would do. Aha, I thought, I'll phone home and get Craig to give me the number. Only problem, I'd forgotten to bring my phone! That's when being in a club like Westerlands pays off. There's always someone ready to help out. Thanks, Peter, for the use of your phone.

Good to see so many Westies turning out on such a cold driech morning. I was feeling pretty grim and half asleep, so tried to jolt myself into life by hurtling off as fast as possible from the start. But this didn't make me feel any less grim, and I failed to shake off Ross Milne from Central, who sat on my shoulder for the first 3 laps and then took me by surprise at the start of the 4th lap by surging and opening a slight gap that was enough for him to finish 1st.
