Tinto Hill Race
Only a few Westies wandered up into deepest Lanarkshire for this classic race that rounds off the hill racing season. The weather was fine, if a bit windy, and fortunately the snow that covered Tinto the following day was absent on Sat. About 260 runners hared off along the narrow muddy track as I tried to not get left too far behind. My heart rate had zoomed up immediately to about 85% max and stayed there for the whole race. As we hit the hill proper I mixed power walking with slow running and hit the summit cairn in just under 30mins, with an aching back from the usual hunched over position. The descent is a classic, not too steep and decent enough grip and I felt up for it. I lost a few places to some demon descenders, but also passed a few, including fellow Westie Alasdair Duke.
I crossed the line in a shade over 43mins, only a minute down on my 2008 time, so taking into account the ravages of father time on my weary body, I was pretty pleased. I scraped into the top third of the field with 87th place of 264 finishers. Alan Gilkison led us home in 33rd place and Pauline had a great run to finish as first F50 (I have your prize). My sixteenth (and slowest) race here and hopefully I'll be back for many more. Thanks to Cameron Scott and his team of Carnethy organisers for a fine day out.

Well done John and thanks for the shout of encouragement. I did respond but I was a hundred metres down the hill by the time it eventually filtered from brain to mouth!
Another amazing turnout at Tinto. I presume its popularity is due to the accessibility from Glasgow and Edinburgh and its short-length.
I thought I was going to improve on last year's time but ended up a few seconds slower. I don't think I can go any faster on the downhill. Pretty much full out the whole way and I managed to claw-back 7 places. Will have to try again next year.

It was nice to see such a big overall turnout for this one, albeit with a relatively small Westie contingent, made smaller still by Fraser Laird's last-minute withdrawal due to work commitments... and clear, sunny weather, despite the wintry chill that warned of the cold night (and 8 inches of snow) still to come.
I never felt like I was firing on all cylinders, and fell embarrassingly ten per cent short of my pre-race target of 40 minutes - my only explanation/excuse for the lethargic performance is that I was feeling too cold and lazy to brave the chilly weather with a warm-up jog, and stayed in the car until minutes before the race was due to start! (perhaps this says more about my mentality than I would wish to let on... but it was REALLY cold until we got moving!)

My first experience of Tinto. I had heard so much about it prior to the race and it lived up to the hype. With good conditions for running and a fine turnout the atmosphere was great. My inexperience of hills showed on the ascent as I caught fleeting glimpses of Mr Brennan powering up ahead of me, My only thought at that point was I'll catch him on the way down. As I turned at the top I went hell for leather on the descent and all caution was thrown to the wind. BIG MISTAKE !!!!!! My big right arthritic toe stubbed on a rock and I somersaulted on the scree. After a couple of minutes I managed to continue and finish the race. I won no prizes for my running or triple pike gymnastic skills but have been left with a severe case of Tinto toe. Apologies to Brian as I never made it to the hall for tea and cakes but the toe decided we were going home.

Hope you recover soon JQ, you've been in fine form recently. I really wanted to be there to put right a terrible time from 2008, but the Curse Of Pre-Entry struck again!

Like John, I had a tumble catching my big toe on a bit of rock that was hiding in the mud. A gallant gentleman just in front of me stopped to check that I was OK and after I had finished, John very kindly provided First Aid with the help of a well stocked First Aid kit. A big thank you to both of you for your concern and thanks to Brian for hunting John down for me when he saw the state of my arm.
My time was a bit down but I felt that I lost time partly in my fall but mainly waiting in a line to get through the gate while younger folk annoyingly used the wooden fencing at the side of the gate like a ladder and jumped in ahead of the queue.
However, all I could think about as I stormed down the hill was Monday night's rep session where Nigel had us running up and then down the toughest hill without a break. It was the ideal preparation for Tinto. Thanks again, Nigel.
