Glasgow University 5-mile road race

Determined as I am to improve on Drew's record of over 30 GUH&HRRs, I packed my yellow Reebok zipper slippers and home-embroidered WestyHoey vest for the fray on a dreich Saturday. The great thing about this race is, despite route changes too numerous to mention, it still is a Golden Oldies Road Show, featuring no less than the Hon. Archie Cameron this year, resplendent in original Westy retro cotton vest. Also present were Ian Struthers, Hamilton, and the young Hares & Hounds Westy liaison guy (sorry...see names at my age?).

This year they had managed to open the gate from the Garscube Estate that leads to the Switchback, which helped. Another feature were these ankle microchips with VELCRO fastener, which made you feel like a cross between a runaway jailbird and a pensioner on a day-trip. This hi-tech attachment was supposed to simplify compilation of race times and results, but as I type this on Saturday evening at 10.30pm, no results available yet - BAH. All I know is that yon wee Cameron eluded me after I'd bust a gut to catch him on lap 2!

I understand that 2 Inverclyde lads came 1st and 2nd.

Despite the clash with Loch Ossian there were a few Westies there, although unfortunately I missed the retro and homemade vests and only saw Hamilton and Ciaran. I ran before and after the race to keep my mileage high this week so treated the race like a tempo run. I was quite pleased with my time in the end. It is a nice race and I always enjoy it. Plus with chip timing it's become quite high-tech, a far cry from everyone buzzing around at the last minute deciding who's going to scribble down the times at the finish line.

Winning time was by Chris McKay (Inverclyde) in 23.57

    Westies:
    Scott 28.48
    Ciaran 32.47
    Hamilton 34.55
    Archie 38.44
    Graeme 39.23
    Ian 41.11

Some surprising stats in the full results: apparently the first GUH&H finisher was the remarkable Elspeth Curran, 17th in 27.45, with Natalie Sharp 37th in 29.22 next. Matthew Gillespie (3rd) is credited to Edinburgh University (some mistake?) and indeed there are more prominent EUH&H finishers than I recall at the start. I blame them chips...
Finally, where oh where were the Westy wummin? Up a mystical Highland loch? Och aye!

The results show Michael Gillespie in 3rd place (elder brother of Matthew), who does in fact run for EUHH.
