Ben Venue hill race 2010

Bless Bella's cotton socks, the second year of their Ben Venue race was again touched by the hands of the October weather gods. This year, the rain was more of a challenge than the wind, so for the first time, the complete race course was run and records duly set.

Undeterred, a healthy number of Westies gathered, sopping, on the start line of the tarmac road that leads up to the forest. These first few kilometres sorted the wheat from the chaff, and I dropped backwards, losing sight of Alasdair, Shona, Steffen and Murdo who heave-ho ed up the steadily ascending track to pop out onto the hill proper. I managed to keep near enough Brian the-racing-demon who lead a good path up the steep, grassy hillside onto the ridge. The route swept between the two knobbly summits and, for me, involved a great deal of slipping and sliding up and down clumps of rock and extricating my legs from areas of peat hag and deep bog.

Having performed my quarterly (thanks Brian and Manny for the pedantry) public service of a blood donation not 48 hours before the race, the distinct feeling of running on empty had me consider whether it was wise to sit down for a while until my head stopped spinning, but with such indistinct paths to follow in the mist, I tried to keep with the Brennan lead bunch for fear of being lost in a man-eating bog. Finally, we dropped off the ridge and slid and bumped down the grassy burns to a deer fence, and after a bit of a scramble around a field of felled forest, and a dog-leg which I'm sure was not part of the plan, rejoined a path leading back to the forest from which we had come.

The last 15 minutes was a foot-slapping, continual descent down the track to the finish. With nothing left, I was happy to be overtaken by a few enthusiasts. Shona had an excellent run in first position until she was pipped just before the finish line by Jacqui Higginbottom. Tim Austin and Alan Gilkinson were in the first finishing bunch, with Alasdair, Steffen, Mindy, Brian and John Hamer finishing strongly. The highlight for me was Emma Birnie's delicious chocolate and ginger cornflake cakes from a makeshift canvas kitchen replete with culinary delights.

    Tri - monthly blood donations!!!?
I think that is classed as a leak.
You should be a lot lighter though!

Excellent race and a great turnout from Westies. Kept going OK and I was well chuffed keeping up with Ellie, even being ahead of her for about half of the race, until she just pulled away in the last mile or so. The glow of achievement faded however when Ellie revealed post-race that she'd given blood within the previous 2 days ......ah well .....I always said she was at least one pint short of a gallon anyway.
Good course although confusing when you're looking for a checkpoint and all you see are 2 guys sheltering behind a rock and showing no interest in the runners whatsoever .....plus the slightly wandering route when you first come off the hill.
Another race done ......next week Bennachie beckons !

I suspect Manny's comment was correct Ellie ......did you mean quarterly ?

An excellent report Ellie, thanks for writing it up.

I agree entirely with Brian's comment about "2 guys sheltering behind a rock and showing no interest in the runners whatsoever". Up until the point where they were standing humourlessly (at what I now know was the coll between Ben Venue and Creag a Bealach) I had been absolutely flying, and felt strong enough to push on and get a decent finishing time... but a group of four of us followed the walkers' path heading North, rather than follow the fence posts up to the second checkpoint. Surely the main reason those two marshalls were standing there was to advise runners that this was the point where the route turns left???

Still, I really enjoyed the race, and yes, I know I only have myself to blame for my shoddy navigation (and yes, I appreciate that marshalls generously shiver through horrendous weather for hours at a time for our benefit - it's not an easy task - but the whole point of internet forums is to whinge about something or other, so please indulge my rant...)

Firstly thanks for the large Westies turnout at the recent Ben Venue race. And thanks for the follow-up race report & comments. These are all very helpful in fine-tuning the race for next year's SHR championship race.

The course map was (I believe) very clear, with a photo & text description available on line for further pre-race study. Without getting too philosophical, I think we need to remember that hill running does involve map reading, navigation and route choices, so too many marshalls/arrows/tape on a hillside is a bad thing (certainly in my book). However, there will be more marshalls next year at a couple of key points & I do apologise for the ambiguity about what constitutes a "checkpoint" - I will be clearer next year.

Finally, I cannot believe Emma is getting the credit for the chocolate crispy cakes - I made them!

    See you all next year.

    Cheers
