Calderglen Handicap

Results | Photos

The first Calderglen handicap race went really well with 22 runners turning out. JD had done a great job marking the course and with my family marshalling the road crossings, there was no major navigational gaffs (unlike the Comrie relays!).
I knew that we only had about an hour of good light to play with so Drew was under pressure to set the handicaps and get everybody off and running. I think he got it about right (apart from mine of course!). Ken McMahon came in first with a time of around 32.45 (the fastest of the night i believe), just ahead of my EK training buddy, Gerry Reid (33.00) who was having a guest run.
First lady in was Pauline i think and i'm sure Drew will add the times soon.
Well done to everybody who took part. The response to the course seemed to be pretty positive, so i will put the event on again next year but perhaps earlier in the summer to provide more daylight.
Finally, thanks to all the marshalls including Eileen Reid and Davie Mac, JD for marking the trail, Drew for timing and John Quinn for buying me a beer in the pub afterwards.

Thanks Don and the Reid family for making our visit to the dark side so memorable. I now have an appreciation of the complex navigation skills needed to travel around the "tunnels" of East Kilbride and can only imagine the size of the hippocampuses (hippocampi?) of the locals. The traily race route was just my cuppa tea, and although the handicapping was pretty rubbish, the route length was just right for a Wednesday evening blast, and it was quite fun to avoid the hurtling bodies of the faster runners passing me on the narrow path. I'll spend today enjoying distinguishing my nettle stings from midge bites.

Clearly the trauma of being in East Kilbride on a trail race was too much for John(we won't say which one), as he sprinted off back in the direction of Glasgow. Get back here - they cried out - too late,he wasnae havin' it. Someone really must have offended him.
Was not expecting all those marshals and the arrows,so thanks Don and all your helpers.Great to do this trail again.

    Ouch!!
Running back in the Glasgow direction (or was it Hamilton) was no reflection on the great job done by John & Don, more the fact that my hippocampus was clearly left at home that particular evening.
Thanks to Don, Elma, JD, the kids and Dons' EK entourage for setting up a cracking race.
Well done to Ken who passed me at a tremendous pace.
Looking forward to running this one again.
