Millport 10 miler
Following a rather embarrassing confusion over my 'weekend away', which saw me handing over the Comrie relay organisation into more competent hands before realising that I would be around for the relays after all, I was dragged, kicking and screaming to dispell my energies on the little island of Great Cumbrae on Sunday morning.
After a replenishing stop at Nardini's in Largs, Captain and Captainess (no relation) hopped on the shuttle ferry to the island and took a pleasant meander along a winding country road over to the town of Millport.
To cut a (slightly short) 10 mile story shorter, conditions were warm and sunny as the field of 160 or so runners (including a disturbingly high number of east coasters) streamed out of Millport along the coastal road to complete the tarmac circuit of the island.
I find it hard to offer much commentary on a road run, other than I started running and kept going at pretty much the same pace (three or four people over took me), until I got to the end, where I actually dug in a bit in response to alarming shouts of doom and failure from the bystanders.
I managed to pocket some winnings, which more or less covered my convoluted journey back to Glasgow involving a ferry, car, bus, ice-cream, train, bus combo and an unsuccessful attempt at hitch-hiking.
Captain Chris also ran well, although unlikely to admit it... At this point in time, results remain a mystery to me. I'm sure this will be updated in due course.

An entertaining write-up!....a hint of the stylistic quirks of GrimOrr, perhaps?....although surely not as barking as ex-Westie Scott McKendrick's reviews of his sandwiches or somebody else's car (in lieu of a humdrum race narrative)...

I think what Ellie meant to say is that she was 1st lady in 66:37, finishing 2 minutes ahead of Toni McIntosh's twin sister Laura Wallace. I was 7th overall (and 3rd M40) in 58:28.

Loved this race when I ran it in 2003 - still have the commemorative T-shirt! It's a fast and flat 10.25 miler, which I think I completed in 73 minutes or so. Ellie, the charm of such races is that you can enjoy superb views of the Firth of Clyde and its other islands along the way, plus there is no risk of missing the route in this case!

Ah, the joys of Millport. Back in the '80's it was a favourite warmup race for the Glasgow marathon when literally thousands would descend on the Cumbrae Ferry complete with Ron Hill mesh vests and non-gusseted shorts! For many years it was a great favourite of Archie, Ian, Tony, Andy Freer et al and it was there that I made my most spectacular race start ever. But none of us actually ever won anything, so good on you Ellie. Hope you got your photo in the Largs & Millport Weekly News?
