Croftamie Handicap
8th September 2010
A good turnout of 15 Westies for tonight's Croftamie Handicap, plus the ever reliable Drew Turnbull taking bribes for handicaps, and doing the course marking and time keeping. The handicaps worked out pretty well with everyone finishing the 7.8 mile course within 7 minutes, apart from Owen who got slightly lost.
Handicap winner in a much improved time was social sec. Fiona Hutchinson. Fastest lady of the night was Ellie Homewood in 54:50. Only one person got lost this time. Owen O'Neill having cycled out from Glasgow got dropped off the back, and took a few wrong turns, but thankfully appeared before it was fully dark.

Ideal night for running, and good to see a few new faces too. Thought the game was over when Chris passed me soon after I had wheezed off the moor, but with Ken in hot pursuit I managed to keep it going back to Croftamie, and a bit quicker than I did it 3 years ago.

Nice to be back for my first proper race since the spring (I discount village fun runs!). Also chuffed to be only 2 minutes slower than 2 years ago - which, according to Chris' amazing timing system (see Report) must mean I ran 8 miles or so in 5 minutes in 2008? some mistake surely.
More seriously, we(sties) have to do something about marking the course. A simple suggestion would be to customise the National Cycle Network signs to Croftamie with yellow markers (and possibly miles to finish?). Second, glad that Ellie picked up on my nifty idea of leaving my car at the finish - because the main road is a nasty stretch with minimal verges, blind corners, and fast cars. Could we commandeer a people carrier for the evening? or a friendly local farmer's tractor and trailer (full of sweaty Westies)?

Does the route get longer every year? Despite having done it a few times before I still think the turnings are meant to be sooner than they actually are and I'm also taking much longer each year to finish. It must be an almost imperceptible stretching of the earth in the Croftamie area, could the proximity to the Highland Boundary fault be affecting things?? ....hmm I wonder!!

Great night, and yes Cat, it does get longer. The real hero of the night was Drew who marked the course, sent us off, counted us in, brought home the wanderer - oh!, and gave me an excellent handicap. Let's hear it for Drew!!!!

....and not just at this race either. Hurrah for DT!!!
Credit where it's due Fiona - your 5-minute improvement is as much the cause of your victory as Drew's handicapping...well done!

Yes indeed, credit due TO FIONA! for twisting this selfish old git's arm and sending us (+ Colin + Pauline) in quest of Owen, who turned up on cue as we tried to remember the twists and turns of the course in reverse!
Credit to Drew for marking some tricky junctions - but not "Muffy's detour" at halfway! - which may have been where Owen missed the trail.
Anyway...any course which includes a farm called Wester Cameron must suffer from a few wrong turns?!

What a pleasant evening that was! Many thanks to Drew for marking the course, and thanks to the clouds for staying away. See you all soon hopefully.

Sorry I wasn't there to enjoy the delights of "Muffy's detour", but pleased to hear that someone else explored it :)
