Westies triumph at Two Inns hill race

Results

Five brave Westies runners travelled to the inaugural staging of the Two Inns hill race. The others who stayed away probably did so following some awful weather forecasts. However, given the effort that goes into staging such a long race and given that this is an area of dramatic scenery I thought this is too good an opportunity to miss. As it turned out the mountain gods smiled on us with some lovely conditions of broken warm sunshine and a cooling southerly breeze throughout. Only exception was Fraochaid where towards the top some windproof was required.
The field of 37 runners (I thought there were more) started off in a field opposite the Creagan Inn and immediately begun the steep climb up Beinn Churalain on pretty much wild and pathless terrain. From there the race follows a number of fence lines on a fairly flat ridge with a few smaller tops before the climb up to Fraochaidh. From there on the race follows a slightly better footpath on better ground. The views are now becoming more spectacular with the Ballachulish Horseshoe as well as the Anoach Eagach ridge in full view, plus the hills on the southern side of Glencoe. The last major climb is up Sgorr a’Choise from where you follow some deer tracks back steeply down to the landrover track for the final couple of miles back to the Clachaig Inn. For safety reasons we were taken off the LR track and over some awful un-runnable tussock to cross the road right opposite the car park we go through to get to the finish line. This was by far the worst bit of the entire route.
Our efforts, however, were rewarded with what Manny described the “first Westies team victory in living memory”. Perhaps Manny winning the overall race had a lot to do with it. So congratulations and adulations to him are in order for such a grand achievement.
Refreshments were served in the public bar of the Clachaig Inn plus the usual selection of real ales that the place is known for. What a jolly amazing day out. I shall be back again and again.
Order:
Manny
Graham K
Dave Rogers
Steffen
Brian B

Yours truly.

Well done you guys, esp Manny. What with young Adam get victory by default at Menstrie with a fine run and Manny scooping the loot at the 2 inns, things are looking good for westies!!

Well done for the report Stef - I was holding off on the vain promise of V50 winner, Mr B(P) Brennan, of a report - I suspect he is still lying hungover in a backroom of the Kirk having over-celebrated his win on the church wine...
Yes folks, the 2 Inns is a superb route, very much a true hill race, and as Herr G says passing through the heart of some fabulous west coast scenery. The first half is a brutal big climb up the first hill and onto a very broad ridge, where a bit of thick mist could reek havoc on anyone straying too far or trying to cut the many corners, from the meandering (and in places disintegrating) fenceline which runs all the way to the final hill check point. So even if you are duff at navigating, there is a line to follow virtually all the way!
The second half is on a much narrower and well defined ridge and makes for magic running, finishing with a big grassy, and in places lumpy, drop into Glen Muidhe before the final 2 mile "dash" to the line - ahem!!
The route is the brainchild of John Grieve, the Glencoe MRT leader, along with race orginisation from the good folk of LochaberAC and marshalling from the MRT, the race is a fund raiser for their very worthy cause and I am sure will be much better attended in future years as word spreads of its charms.
My race went rather well getting away from the chasing pack of 4 on the way up Fraochaidh in thick mist, comtortably opening up a gap on 2nd placed Craig Mitchell of maybe some 10 or 15mins by the final hill.
However, come the seemingly easy final mile, across what can only be described as Hell on Earth, with a combination of thigh deep Bog Myrtle, bog, long grass and a hundred hidden drainage ditches, crumpled my legs to melted butter, racked them with solid cramps in both limbs, and the will to live ebbed away down one of the those ditches! I ended up walking most of that mile to the road crossing and finished miserable, with Craig (who went the wrong way up the main road - very lucky him!) finishing only a couple of minutes adrift! So it would have been harsh if LAC had won the team prize - 4 huge bottles of appropriate Faoch Ale going to me, Graham, Dave R and Steffan, with Brian B picking up the V50 loot! What a day!
A vote of thanks to the organiser for a splendid race, trying to kill us with cakes afterwards and the promise of changing that last mile!!
I thoroughly recommend this race to you all for next year, and hopefully a Westies Wummin to complete the prizes set!?
    Well done the team!

I love the idea of hell on earth, hope they don't bin that bit. So gutted to have missed this one, I will spare you the details, but was on the A82 with gels packed when it all went awry. Congratulations Manny and the rest of the team on your achievements. It's great to hear and read about other Westies racing on the hill with supporters in tow. Still smarting at missing out, but very pleased for you all.

    A top day indeed !

Stayed in or around 8th position (accompanied by Oli Blomfield & Ali Kennedy both Lochaber runners) until coming off the last summit where Oli got passed and opened up a tidy wee lead. Made a significant mistake (but not uncommon apparently) and took a wee bridge back on the landrover track ...realised my error and felt obliged to retrace my steps back onto the flagged section but had lost another place to Annan runner Dan Watson to finish in 10th place (but it was nice to know I had gone through hell correctly).

Was nice that we got the team prize (Dave / Steffen ...I still have your beer in the fridge).

Congrats to Manny on leading the Westies raid on Lochaber ground.

Ellie ...there is always a next time but aye ...missed opportunities are sair !

Apologies Manny but for some reason the computer just didn't want to cooperate with my initial attempted race report ......Steffen's was much better anyway ......a great day out for the westies and let's hope we can get more of you out there racing .......unless you happen to be over 50 and quite nippy on yer pins .......in which case please stay from races or at least have the decency to only run with other fast people .........OK Don pot-hunter?
