Lomonds of Fife
For the first race in the club's autumn league, a grand total of seven Westies gathered in Strathmiglo for the Lomonds of Fife hill race.As the lead runners dragged the peleton up West Lomond from the starting field, it became apparent that the heat of the day was going to take its toll. The dry, hard earth made the steep, contouring descent from the summit more tricky than usual and although the track through the forest offered some shade, the uneven, stony surface felt seriously uncomfortable to my Compeeded heels.
So, with relief, we peeled off the track to the softer and well funghified (did anyone else notice those toadstools?!) trod uphill. I was surprised to encounter an ambling Dave R on the approach to the road crossing who mumbled something about having a bad day. With Steffen ahead of me on the climb up East Lomond, and having been rehydrated at the water station, I had reason to keep a pace, but seemed to lose him somewhere on the path back down to the water station where friendly shouts were passed about between those going out to and those returning from the hill.
Scorchio- thank goodness for passing the water station twice!
I was keen to remember the advised route off the funny outcropped bit up to the track to W.L, but in the end, followed those in front over the spiky remains of burnt heather. Once on the track, the point is to just keep a rhythm, which I managed, overtaking another Westie walking wounded (John D). Knowing that I'd be finishing in a small matter of minutes, I stomped up to the summit and enjoyed chasing newbie Westie David Dickson to the gully where I put my shorts to the test down that textured grass slide. Nuff said. I couldn't quite catch him during the run out to the final field, so came in third Westie after Graham and David, and second woman.
Well done to Graham, Steffen, JD, John and John and what on earth happened to Dave R?

Good to see you making a gentle return to racing, Ellie, although I'm concerned that you may be falling below the race-a-day average....and I'm voting for you for Club Scribe!

The Lomonds was a last minute decision for me ...
The last time I ran it (and the only other time I might add), I was hungover having got mixed up with a great bunch of folks the night before at a Blazin Fiddles gig - but that is another story.
This time I decided to make it hard for myself by leaving half my running gear in the house and had the pleasure of a heavy cotton t-shirt to maximise sweat potential.
First summit went well ...the traverse down to the forest went less well with a pile of movement within my right shoe - under my right heel to be exact. Enjoyed the run along the track just behind JD2 until getting a stitch on the climb up to the monument. Chugged a pile of water before the out and back to East Lomond and repeated the rehydration attempt on the way back.
Finally caught up with JD2 as cramp got the better of him before West Lomond and managed to nip past Sarah O'Neil at the bottom of the silly steep descent.
Congrats to all who ran and what the feck did happen to Dave R !?!
Johnston - a guid point well put !

Ahh, the German had a fiddly gig, a wet t-shirt competition, nipped a burd, had a chug, and was first Westie home thus gaining maximum points in the Summertum League!
An outstanding day out in the hills, well done Sir!!!
But worth noting, Ellie was only one minute behind, obviously held up posing for Camera Guy along the way...
Just what the feck did happen to Dave R?!?

Cycling 80 miles round the Trossachs the day before was maybe not the best preparation for this tough wee race, but what the heck, that’s what weekends are for. The day dawned bright and blue, and by 1pm was pretty warm too. After having helped Gordon Pryde out at registration we both quickly changed into racing gear, applied suncream and rushed up to the start field, assured that they couldn’t actually start without the organiser. A good few Westies were milling around, no one really bothering about much of a warm-up, with at least 2 hours of hot, hard hillrunning ahead.
I took it dead easy at the off, as most of the runners hared off up the initial gentle slopes, plodding along with Davy Duncan and trying just to ease into the race. I quite enjoyed the steep climb up to West Lomond, only to immediately turn at the cairn and zip off downhill back the same way. The descending contour along to the forest wasn’t too bad, as I tried to hang on to Davy D, with runners taking all manner of routes here. The forest roads were a bit of a trudge though, as they actually required non-gravity aided effort, and I settled into a slow steady energy-conserving plod.
Places had settled down at this point as I tried to stay ahead of a posse of Fife A.C. ladies up past the monument and the grassy trails to the water station at Craigmead. Fellow Westie Dave Rogers had found the heat a bit much and was sitting the race out in the shade, before getting a lift back. The lead runners were already returning from faraway East Lomond and this allowed for lots of greetings as we passed each other.
I maintained a good steady pace to the summit of East Lomond, the great weather allowing for a fantastic view all the way to West Lomond, which was where we had to head for next. A brisk trot downhill led to the track back to the water station again, and then on to the ancient hill fort and the heathery trudge to the main track. I had gained a few more places by now, though the gaps were growing all around. At the foot of the steep wee climb up to West Lomond for the second and final time I passed another fellow Westies JD No.2 who was cramping up and slowing down.
I was at the top in about 2hrs 10mins, and after the infamous bum sliding descent down the precipitous green gully, finished in 2hrs 16mins. I was pretty pleased with this, as it was only a few seconds down on last year’s dire run, but at least this time I actually felt OK during the race, it being Saturday’s cycle to “blame” this time, as opposed to old age, slow legs or anything like that, of course. All in all, a grand day out amongst lovely scenery and lots of friends and topped off with a pint in the pub. Excellent.
