Last year there were 8 in the starting line up of this wee highland games hill race, this year there was 100 odd!!
Before the start a gaggle of HBTurds tried to knobble the latest addition of young talent to the Westies ranks, wee Maisy, by presenting her with a wooly jumper emblazoned with "I don't wannabe a Westie!" on one side and "I wannbe an HBT!" on the other side!!
Maisy in fine and conclusive response farted and fell asleep. Point made nicely I think.
The race itself was a mad wheech around the park and up the shallow wee heathery lump of Tomnabat, with the compere, none other than the legendary Robbie Shepherd, keeping the spectators up to date with progress from the slopes.
I recovered from an early mistake of floundering in deep heather to get to the top in about 10th, only to lose a few places on the really rough drop of the far side of the hill. The sting in this races tail is having to go most of the way back up the bugger a second time! But I knew it was coming and had held back accordingly, and when the 2nd climb started I stretched out and passed a heap of places and then the final very, very fast drop off back towards the games field and another 3 places along the way, finishing in 6th place, 2nd vet. My first good result of the championship, at last. Other Westies piled in across the line in various states of near death with Murdo, Brian and Keith all in close order and Elsie whupping hubby Peters lardy arse yet again.
Afterwards it was back to Alan & Tilly Smiths for a hog roast tea and a long soak in the hottub, a fine finish to a fine day.
