Tour of Clydeside: Garscube Gallop

With legs well and truly gubbed from Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday's races, Chris and I jogged up to Thursday's 5K trail race around the familiar stomping ground of Garscube woods behind Dawsholm Park. The route is reassuringly undulating and takes in three loops along the paths which meander through the woods. With six minutes to kick off, we turned back from our warm-up toward the start line catching a marshal's wry comment that the race had started. Ha ha! Safe in the confidence that Chris's watch is reliably coordinated to the satellite that sits above Greenwich, we jogged on, but were somewhat puzzled by the fact that there was no one on the start line apart from a few marshals gesturing wildly at us. Some twenty odd minutes later, it was explained that, in a twist, which is admittedly unconventional in normal racing circles, someone had decided to start the race five minutes early. Interesting. However, starting a race at the back turned out to be quite an experience. Rather than spending most of the race desperately hanging on to my peers and trying to keep focused in the zone needed to retain a steady pace, I had the glorious and unfamiliar experience of reeling in runner after runner, most of whom appeared to be walking on the spot as I nipped past. I was glad to happen upon Pat and later, Paula, although didn't stop for a natter, pressing on through the undulating terrain, and feeling disconcertingly unaware of where I sat relative to my peer runners - I had no idea at this point when the race had begun. In contrast to last year, when I found this trail run unbelievably hard work, the 'handicap' system gave the race a much greater sense of movement and progression which added immensely to the enjoyment and served to tone down the seething irritation at missing the premature start...and at least no one overtook me!

Indeed, a strange idea to start the race 5 minutes early when we were returning from our warm up jog. Slightly annoying having made the effort to get there in loads of time, that they started the race without us. I wasn't prepared to panic, so just went to the startline and informed the organisers that I'd take my own time, and then set off at 7:27pm, which was still 3 minutes before the race was due to start.

So in fact Ellie and I ended up running a handicap race, chasing down the field from the rear. It was quite fun to hurtle past so many runners, but not quite the same as having a proper intense race. My own personal watch time was 20:04, which was 43 seconds slower than last year, but last year I'm pretty sure I didn't race on the Wednesday night as well.

I admire your positive attitude, I would have been cursing.

Your experience was the inverse of mine on Wednesday: I started off first, and then had the ignomy of being passed by everyone.... except JD :) Still it was a glorious evening and great fish and chips afterwards.

Great to see Chris & Ellie maintaining a fine Westies tradition of starting the race after the rest of the field. I well remember Westies at the West District Relays in Linwood (circa 1984?) out on a warm-up when the gun sounded; a certain Bill Sheridan would have had the fastest lap...had he started on time (so shame on you Chris, for not having an "intense" race!)

Or who can forget Pat's last-minute turnup at the National's in Irvine, wearing two left PB's???

Unfortunately I also missed the start and intend to set off a week on Monday...don't know how many I will pull in!

The funniest part of the "Pat and the Two Left Walshes" story, was Pat's oblivious nonchalance as she fighting to get the 2nd shoe on, and not looking round to spot that the race had just started.

on behalf of Garscube Harriers and as a marshall on the night, sincere apologies for the unplanned-for early start, Chris and Ellie.

Not aware whether anyone apologised on the night, but I'd have been really peeved if I'd been caught out by race organisers like that!

I'll certainly feedback to folk that I'm ashamed of how we organised that particular aspect of the race.

No worries Steph - evidently someone was just a bit overenthusiastic about starting their gun (probably a man) and the race organisers kindly offset our timings so all was well in the end...and it made a good story... and would have been a good excuse for a dismal performance! :-)

Yes, don't worry about it Steph. It was a bit casual of me and Ellie to go to the start so late, and thankfully we got our times corrected, and it all made a good story!

Chris and Ellie, thanks for your gracious comments, both. I've just emailed Westerlands to ask if you might be looking for runners to make up teams for the Simon Wake Comrie Hills Relay on 12 Sep.

    I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

    Hope you can help!

Here is the appeal again - I and my fellow Garscubian are very keen on running hills. We wondered if Westerlands might need extra runners to make up teams in the Simon Wake Comrie Hills Relay. Our club social event clashes with this relay race on 12 Sep. I am a 43 year-old female. My best 10K time is 49:30. My clubmate is a 59 year old male. Amongst his achievements are a recent 23:30 at Glasgow parkrun in Pollok and 1 hour 47 in the recent Helensburgh Half.

I have done 2 (5K)hill races in the Pentland hills. My clubmate is more experienced. But neither of us have been in category AM events where compass , whistle, bodycover and navigation skills were required.

Or if you could put us in touch with other folk who are looking to make up teams, that'd be useful as well.

    Many thanks in advance.
