Yorkshire 3 Peaks

27th April 2003, 24 miles, 4500ft.

Jogged round the Yorkshire 3 Peaks yesterday. Was fairly windy and rainy, but a good temperature for running. Started pretty slowly and unenthusiastically up into the murk on Pen-y-Ghent. Long undulating run after that to reach Ribblehead near the famous viaduct. From there a nice thrash through a river and up steep open ground and scree to Whernside. Picked off half a dozen people here. Long easy run off before the final slog up Ingleborough. Nice new paving slabs most of the way that deserve to be run up, if you had the energy. Mentally I thought that after the summit it would be a quick steady descent back to Horton-in-Ribblesdale, but in fact this final section was far longer than I was expecting, with plenty of slippy limestone clints and grykes that are good for smacking your toes on.

A well organised event that even used electronic tagging for the 1st time, so you can get your split times if you're that interested.

I think the winner did 3:06. Dave Cummins (Shettleston) was 14th (I think) in 3:35. I was 38th in 3:48. About 300 runners.
