Maddy Moss Hill Race

14th July 2010

A rainy night in Tillicoultry seemed like an attractive offer to many people, as the Maddy Moss saw a good turnout despite the downpour. Heavy rain fell throughout the race, with the runners ascending into the offending cloud near the top of The Law.

Local boy John Denovan was the first Westie home, with a cracking descent to make up around 12 places from Ben Cleuch's summit, where he was trailing Graham Kelly and Scott Mitchell, among others. After falling out of the narrow trod last year, Graham waved Scott through to be second Westie.

Further back, Dom Ketley enjoyed his first Maddy Moss, and a tired Steffen still outran me by a large margin.

Random kit checks were in force, as advertised on the SHR website, understandable on such a wet night and as the race is a Category AM anyway. Many thanks to Ochil HR and all their marshalls who must have had a very damp evening on the hills.

Scott and Dom managed to endure the journey back with me as my iPod provided a fine mix of old skool vs new skool punk, deftly switching from The Undertones to Green Day, the Sex Pistols to Blink 182, and with a few one-hit wonders like The Jags thrown in for good measure.

I have no idea who won the race, but I'm sure the results will be on SHR soon.

This was much more fun than last years attempt. I had been in the country for 3 days after 2 weeks all inclusive in Egypt last year so wasn't too happy running (plodding) up the Law.

On the way up the law I watched Graham Kelly - complete with shiny new shoes - disappear into the distance. I managed to pass Dom about halfway up the Law and kept Scott in sight for most of the climb but he pulled away a bit as I struggled briefly with cramp between the Law and Ben Cleuch.

The descent was excellent and by the time I was climbing Andrew Gannel Scott was in sight again. I managed to catch Scott about halfway down Andrew Gannel and caught Graham at the bottom of Andrew Gannel. I celebrated the latter with a beautiful swallow dive into the bog at the bottom.

I followed Gary Fraser all the way along the path back to the finish passing Emma O'Shea and stopping for a Klinsmann esq dive off the path along the way.

All in all a perfect way to spend a rainy Wednesday night.

Well done guys, sounds like a cracking night.
Clearly I have been consumed by the GOLF fever.
Anyone for a good drenching at St. Andrews?

    Aye ...wild conditions indeed !

Knowing that both Scott and JD2 are great on the descent, i buried myself a bit more than was comfy on the climb. Can confirm that beautiful swallow dive was indeed beautiful !

I had kinda hoped that the new inov8s would lead to a brave and fast descent but sadly my lack of abilty still meant a piss poor performance on the narrow single track.

Was good to see Johnston moving from the tarmac and back onto the hill :-)

Great evening out and congrats to all fellow Westies who ran.
