LAMM 2010

I entered the LAMM some time ago with my friend Rachel Dearden after doing the Saunders Lakeland Mountain Marathon with her last year. After dropping out of the OMM last year and leaving her to find a replacement last minute I knew I couldn't let her down again.

I've struggled with injuries again this year, and only managed 15 mins of running in the past 10 weeks, but it hasn't been too bad as it's given me time to enjoy my other hobbies like climbing and mountain biking.

So I was a bit nervous about my fitness for the LAMM. We were entered in the B and the sensible option would have been to move down a class, but instead I opted to move up, on the grounds that maybe my underlying stamina would get me through and I wouldn't have to run fast!

This year's LAMM was in Glen Fyne and we started the first day being bussed to the familar territory of the Arrochar Alps. I enjoyed the first few hours as we did a mini version of the Arrochar Alps race, traversing each of the summits (but in reverse and without actually visiting the summits) as it was a glorious day! The hike up Ben Vorlich from the dam was pretty tough but we made it. We then headed off North, and by this point we were both starting to feel really tired. The terrain was really rough going underfoot, so we made slow progress. By the time we arrived at the mid camp we'd been on the go for nine hours, and had just enough energy left to put up the tent and crawl inside.

I think it rained most of the night and we awoke to the piper on Sunday morning and a midgy misty damp campsite. The second day started off much more runnable and thanks to Rachel's encouragement we made good progress for the first few controls and even found a sneaky shortcut following a stream through a dense patch of forest But as we headed higher up onto the open fellside the rain and mist closed in and progress slowed a little. We found the navigation tricky in the mist and because we were both so tired by this point. But fortunately we didn't make any major errors. The organisers cruelly sent us down and back up a 400m climb right at the end of the day, and even the run in was a little too exciting for that stage in the day. We followed a track that had been made by all the earlier runners down a steep hillside, but it ended at a ravine, which we had to cross by swinging on some trees!

The second day turned out to be pretty tough too, with almost a third of teams on the A class retiring. We were out 8 1/2 hours on the second day and I have never been so relieved to finish. We finished 1st (and only) ladies team in the A class and 17th overall.

I didn't see whether there were any other westies there, due to crawling into my tent immediately on arrival at the midcamp, and finishing so late on Sunday. (We even missed the prizegiving) but I hope that if there were that you managed to enjoy it! I'm sure I will in hindsight maybe in about 2 years time!

.....tough couple of days with total of 4300m of climb and not surprised a few teams gave up the ghost on Sunday ......we were lying 16th after Saturday and just made the chasing start .....pulled up a couple of places on the Sunday to finish 14th and first Male Vets team ( combined age 111 ) .....great weekend but don't know when I'll be able to run again

    Hi Brian,

Apologies for missing you out of my report, I'm newish to Westies and as I don't turn out regularly for races I don't necessarily recognise all the names.

Well done though, it sounds like you had a good run, especially to make the chasing start and then pull up a few places on the Sunday. Well done on first male vets team! Did you manage to make it back in time for the prizegiving? Or were you still out on the hill like us?

Well the team of Peplinski and Penderis decided to enter the LAMM B course again to prove last year’s result was not just a flash in the pan. Presumably our names make us sound like some elite Greek team, but that was about where it ended. After I made a startlingly bad route choice to the first checkpoint (I blame the cloud of midges at the start for distracting me and making me want to leg it away without looking at the map), George followed this foolish decision of mine with a decision to avoid the footpath and contour around the first hill. Gradually as the crowd of other B-groupers disappeared into the distance ahead, last years result clearly was exactly that: a flash in the pan.

After that we decided to take the “less trod” route choice as we clearly weren’t in with a chance to compete anymore. Some of our route choices were predictably slow, but for a couple we managed some of the fastest split times of the whole group despite what might have seemed bizarre routes to follow and on arriving at the overnight camp were pleasantly surprised to see we were 13th in the chasing start, with places 6 to 12 only a matter of minutes ahead. The overnight camp was an excellent choice by the organisers, with tents scattered over the hillside, and while we were not relaxing watching the other runners finish, or enviously looking at lighter tents around ours, we enjoyed the sunshine and midge-free breeze.

Dreams of glory evaporated the next morning with the cloud of midges and what was becoming habitual poor navigation at the start of the day by me (this time in the cloud though, in mitigation…) when we spent 10 minutes trying to find the second control point before noticing we were on entirely the wrong hill. Racing aside and once we realised that we were not going to do very well, the Sunday turned out to be an even better day than the Saturday, despite the low cloud, and we had a fantastic run through some great scenery and hills. Eventually we crawled in after what was a surprisingly long route choice for the second day, knackered, but with large smiles all round.

Will I do the LAMM again: definitely. Will George agree to team up with me again: probably not unless I agree to go on a mountain navigation course first…

Wow, well done to the other two Westies teams. Fantastic results for getting 1st ladies and 1st vets in the A-course. And George and me, well, hmmm, mumble, mumble, we crawled in a lowly 18th in the B course in the end.
