Disaster at Dumbarton - 3rd June 2010

With a course which is almost entirely flat, the Dumbarton 10k has a reputation for producing fast times...but not tonight. No joyous news of PBs in the immediate aftermath, despite good conditions. Various excuses were cited, from "too warm" to "ash cloud" and "coalition government", but mostly, heads were scratched....

Captain Chris was racing again, 'fresh' from the Kilpatricks the night before. After about 2km, I managed to catch up with him, and we tagged along with Garscube's Lesley Chisholm up to 5k at Dunglass Roundabout, taking around 18:40 to that point...and then it went horribly wrong!

Chris and I both got dropped, and recorded slower times than last week at Clydebank. Chris was home in 38:06 while I slid backwards, caused a stench, and was a general disgrace to the club vest, coming home a minute later. No, I don't know what went wrong either, but it's Not Good Enough, and Simply Won't Do. Some tough training sessions in prospect.

The final insult was the text from the chip timing system saying I'd finished in 58 mins something (other people also reported mix-ups). While I did run like a cow, I wasn't that bad. It was a bit of a kick in the stones, which was perhaps a timely reminder as I had just gone to check that I still had nuts after such an appalling second half.

Dear J Boy, (J for Jaffa, and not Johnston)

Imagine blaming the 'chip' system for you running like a big Coo. As an aficionado of technology and the tinternet, there is just no excuse for you plodding along like a coalition ash cloud. Learn a lesson from the Gormanator and down a beer or ten, and then you'll be running like a keg of Guinness crossed with a Vindaloo.

Ha! 58 minutes something! Johnston, I knew you'd faded badly in the 2nd half, but I didn't realise it was quite that bad. Your time wasn't so awful, but it does look like you dropped about 30 places in the 2nd half of the race.

My only plan was to run right behind Lesley Chisholm, who I assumed would lead me to about 37:30. In the end I was 6 seconds adrift of her, and my time was surprisingly just over 38 minutes.

    Humbled of Hyndland

    Outcome:
    60. Lesley, 38:00
    66. Chris, 38:06
    94. Johnston, 39:11

Aye ....nae good can come from all that road running. Aboot time you got back to the hills (all cairn issues aside).

Must have been a week for "unexpected" results ...will let you guess what went wrong at the Kilpatricks :-)

    Johnston,
Its time you treated this running malarky a bit more seriously.!!
