Grim's gala gallop

I'm sure that Johnston and Cap'n Chris never intended to include "fun runs" in Westy news, but us old yins have to find our fun where we can. The village where I grew Up(lawmoor) held its gala day today, with a tempting feature: a Fun Run round the Halket, a nice hilly 5.5 miler on secondary roads which was my fave training run 40+ yrs ago when I was a gawky G.U.Hare & Hound. (OK, enough memories). Off trotted a mixed bunch of runners, led by a skinny quine and several paunchy blokes puffing in her wake. At 4 miles I was till holding forth (and 4th), but on the long downhill towards the finish, 2 blokes sped past. Still, a finish time just under 44 minutes, five minutes behind the fast lass (s.q.) winner, not a bad day's training!
Now I must get ready for the Dunlop Fun Run next weekend. This could become a habit? Summer Fun Run league anyone?

So you're from Uplawmoor originally Grim? That explains everything!

I like the idea of a summer fun run league. We could include Gala Week races too; there's one (or used to be, at any rate) down in Dalry. The Gala Queen and her maids turn up in a chauffeur driven bogey (well it is Ayrshire) and start the event off; it's a cracking wee race. Then there's the Marymass 10K in Irvine, a 10.5K in Dundonald (they always have to be different), and so it goes on.

Reminds me of the time i went down to Fairlie to do the Kaim hill race when it was held on a Sunday. Got there only to find that it was cancelled. Went up the hill anyway with Davy Duncan who told me that there was supposed to be a crack squad of runners from Ochils over to do the race but he did not know where they had gone.
Later that day when driving home through Largs, who did i see winning the Largs Gala day fun run but 4 or 5 purple vests from Ochil hill runners just ahead of the guy in the clown suit and the over weight lady pushing a pram. Nice one guys - a pots a pot! Seemed that a confused local in Fairlie had informed them that the race had been moved to Largs!!
