Aonach Mor Gondola Uphill Race

1st Jan 1997

'97 got off to an uphill start with thick ice and even thicker runners to contend with. About forty three runners graced the start line with varying amounts of alcohol still blocking their oxygen lints to the brain. The guys were represented by Captain Gorman and Corporal Rigby, but it was Jenny who stole the show by beating both to the top! - in the gondola!!

The plod got off to its usual fast start and those in spikes were at a distinct advantage crossing the many icy patches and burns. On several occasions I had to side-step runners tobogganing back down the hill on their bums - the race is meant to be uphill only!

Breathing in the freezing air made life very uncomfortable and stinging cold toes were not much fun either. However, good results were achieved with Mark getting 3rd place behind Dave Weir and Lochaber's Stephen Burns, while Manny took four minutes off his PB to finish 12th (27m46s). Sadly no third counter to make us a team. Most other Westies went to the 'Dash' just so they could claim free beer! Well, they all missed the stunning views from the gondola station and the free hurl back down! If you're up in Lochaber next year you should try the race - it's good fun but hurts!

1 Dave Weir

2 Stephen Burns LAC

3 Mark Rigby Westies

12 Manuel Gorman Westies
