Mull Fell Race
24th April 2010
I headed over to Mull at the weekend to support John Coyle's super low-key race, starting from the shore of Loch na Keal. 19 runners made it to the start line. On the first climb Tom Smith set the pace, along with local runner Steve MacInnes, followed by Alex Johnson, with Stewart Whitlie, Steven Fallon and Alan Smith taking a different more direct line. I shuffled along trying to keep up with Russell Anderson. The final climb to Ben More was cold and blustery, and the initial descent was awkward with the wind knocking you sideways. HBT's Andy Sims easily caught me as I hobbled off the hill, and stumbled through the tussocks back to the finish.
The other reason I went to Mull was to see the start of Spyke's Munro record attempt, which began at 6am on Sunday 25th April wth an ascent of Ben More. Spyke was up and down Ben More in 2 hours, before cycling to Fishnish and paddling across to Lochaline. I then joined Spyke for the 55 mile bike ride up to Glenfinnan, before I baled out and left him to climb the Glenfinnan pair of Munros. The main aim of Spyke's challenge is to see if he can get close to Charlie's existing Munro record that has stood since 2000.
