A tale from (not quite) the tail - Hunter's Bog Trot
I decided to do this race some time ago when I realised that the Orienteering and Hill-running calendars had managed one of their rare non-clashes. I was aiming to catch the 11 am train from Queen St with the 11.15 as my fall-back but the former train was cancelled (ash on the line?) and so it was 12.10 before I reached Waverley. Still I made it down to Holyrood Park with time to register, change, do a bit of a warm up jog and exchange pleasantries with Graeme Orr who was the only other Westie there. I've done this race once before in 2006 but had forgotten what a wee toughie it is. As we started up the side of Hunter's Bog with the words "Radical Road" and "Salisbury Crags" echoing in my head from the prerace talk, it all started to come back to me. There's the climb up from the Bog to the path along the top of Salisbury Crags, which you do twice, and the Radical Road, described in the Arthur's Seat Geology walks as a "gentle climb". It might be gentle when you're walking but when you're trying to run up it, it seems never-ending. I confess that I did slow down to a walk for a bit but then the hill reps effect kicked in and I found that I was able to run the rest of the way. Graeme was ahead of me and in sight for most of the race. I did lose track of him at one point quite early on when he discarded his yellow bunnet in the Spring sunshine but that distinctive W on his vest helped me find him again. It was only on the final downhill that he really pulled away from me.
At the finish, there were impressive goody-bags which seemed to come from something called the Kilomathon. They included a long-sleeved black T-shirt which was an ideal change for the journey home - not bad for the £2 entry fee. I got a PB, 26 seconds faster than 4 years ago and was 3rd LV50, 14 seconds behind the 2nd LV50. Graeme was 2nd MV60 but had already collected a prize from YP and gone before they announced the race prize-winners.

Sounds like another great result Pauline! Nige's reps sessions seem to be the key to your current good form...must get back to them...

Pauline drew the short straw, or should I say I wimped out of Johnston's new-style report posting. I was so pleased to not only finish this race (it gives you a chance to drop out after a lap!) but also to hold off not only any challenge from Pauline, or indeed from a pair of Boggies, on the final descent. Ronnie Gallacher and Kate Jenkins were 2 other former "Westoids" in attendance, the former looking a bit under the weather but kind enough to haud ma bunnet at the end of lap 1. "I'm in a race here!" as I Grim-ly said.
The line-up for the race looks like a Boggie social, old troupers like YP, Dave Taylor, Ivor Normand and Nixon in attendance together with a scary number of Boggettes with baby buggies (with handy brown-hued nappies?).
I haven't checked the Boggie website nor the Sunday Herald sports pages for results, but two EU Hairies were haring away up the first long climb when last I saw the leaders. A teenage micro-Boggie passed me on one climb, but I think I held my own pretty well. Nice cool weather!
Pauline mentions the goodie bags, and as a connoisseur of the art-form, may I say that this was outstanding: a long-sleeved black T-shirt with logo, disgusting Yazoo drink, several energy bars, hemp (?) sweetie, linseed sprinkle etc for a humble £2 entry fee. YP for Chancellor, say I: deficit what deficit? The great man himself revealed the hidden agenda of the race (and its brown-hued participants): to instill the benefits of beer!
I was pleased to "win" a bottle of same as Mr Westy for the day. I even got the last laugh, thanking my hosts for the anti-ageing Nivea cream in the goodie bag. I promised to return next year for the junior race!

Sounds a lot more fun than the park run. Anti ageing nivea cream definitely an enticement for me (when I get my buttock back into gear). Though perhaps Grim would have appreciated a new pair of tights more...

Well done to Pauline and Graeme for keeping the Westies flag flying amongst all the Boggies. Congratulations Pauline on a great run well done.

The Bog Trot is indeed a fine event and the goody bags sound immeasurably better than those handed out at the Nigel Barge (I still have the bottle of Pantene conditioner from 2008 if anyone's interested?) in addition to being considerably better value for the entry fee.
And I note another first for Pauline. It's the first time that I've heard the surreal banter with Grimorr of the Neilston being described as "exchanging pleasantries"! Mind you, the patter does usually bring a smile to the face I suppose, or is it a grimace?
Do they still do a prize for the handicap by weight?
