In the Dark Handicap

3rd March 2010

Results | Route

18 runners braved the baltic conditions at Clachan of Campsie for the Westies In the Dark Handicap. Heavy snow cover above Crow Road made of full winter conditions on the hill. Ellie was first runner back to win the handicap, followed by Don Reid who ran the fastest time of the night. Many thanks to Drew and Margaret for organising the handicaps and time-keeping.

I really enjoyed the handicap, it was my first proper run since I injured my foot back in October, so it was just fab to be out. I especially liked running up and down the hill in the snow in the dark. I was thinking that you could make the race safer, more exciting and more spectator friendly by having everyone run up the hill twice (via the start) instead of running along the road.

I enjoyed the extension to the handicap which Paula and I invented: 'Hunt the Curry House' perhaps this could become a regular feature of Westies curry nights, with prizes for first and last to arrive.

It was great to see such a good turn out on Wednesday - with the ol' stalwarts and newcomers mixing it up - and especially great to see you back and running Elsie.

Good point about the course issue. Unfortunately, it seems the risking life and limb is par for the course with these handicap events - certainly making for a more exciting and faster run.

You're right, we really need to attend to the secret curry location issue, as there could be some serious implications if people missed out on the post-run feast...hypos in the Lennoxtown area ain't funny and may constitute an issue for the AGM.

Well, that was certainly an experience!
It was my first hill run of the year (I'm a complete novice, really) and talk about in at the deep end ...

The snow made it very tough on my legs and I ended up with sore shins by Friday, however a good (painful) deep tissue massage and plenty icing soon sorted them out.

Everyone was very friendly and welcoming, and I thank you all for that, cos it can be quite daunting joining an established group of extremely fit runners!!

Probably see you at another training run in the not too distant future ...

    Ellie,

Don't worry I was only jesting both about the course and about the curry! I just loved running up the snowy hill so much I wanted to do it twice, I'm sure not everyone would share my enthusiasm!

It was all my own fault for not finding the curry house as I wasn't really listening when Chris gave directions, just thinking I could follow someone (that approach seemed to have worked well for the handicap)!
