Carnethy 2010
Fantastic running weather, the 40th Carnethy and with two Westies, Pat and JD, due to complete their 21st race, what could be better? Well, a means of getting there would have been a help. But thanks to all the Westies for their offers of lifts, spoilt for choice I enjoyed the comfort of Matthews driving. Arriving at the race there were Westies in evidence everywhere, including a large contingent of cheerful non-running Westies.
The start was the usual mud-splattered dash across the field before the queue at the style (not helped by the runner in front of me pausing for what seemed like an inordinate amount of time before hopping over). The variation in the route this year for the new fence meant a quite a few runners enjoyed an early slide on the slope down to the gate in the new fence line. On the way up Scald Law I decided to slow down to see if I could avoid what seems to be turning into a habit of getting cramp on the last climb up Carnethy. Way ahead Manny was leading the Westies charge with Murdo and John Denovan slowly disappearing ahead of me, shortly followed by Ellie powering up the hill. That would be the last I saw of Ellie with a fantastic run finishing as 5th female (Ellie that is and not me).
The peace and quiet my Saturday afternoon jog was suddenly shattered by some sort of wailing banshee descending uncontrollably down South Black Kip Hill – oh hello Johnston. It could only be a Westie scaring the natives like that. After a short chat with said Westie, JD soon came past as well, looking non-plussed and relaxed and that finally spurred me into action so I popped past Johnston again and then past JD on the way up East Kip. By this time Murdo and John Denovan were miles ahead out of sight, but I gradually picked off runners until I finally caught Murdo just before the summit of Carnethy. From there is was down, down, down to the finish hoping that Murdo, Johnston or JD would not storm past me before the finish.
Well done to all the Westies and especially to Pat and JD for finishing their 21st Carnethy. And thanks for all those shouts of encouragement from all the supporting Westies, especially Drew and Chris, and to Matthew for getting me to and from the race.

Congrats to the two 21-ers!! ...and welcome back to Westies action to Jon and Jenny after long absences. Good to see a healthy turnout of running and supporting Westies.
Apologies to Jacques and JD for my mad gravity-assisted appearance mid-race...I soon dropped back to a more sensible plod after that, just checking back to make sure Brian Brennan wouldn't pass me on the final descent this time. After some social chat on the way up Scald Law, even Kilmarnock's Dr Roddy Pugh got sick of my rank patter and left me for dead too.
Happy to finish with no more injured muscles than when I started, which was the aim. Should be fine to resume training this week and hit the National XCs next weekend. Enjoyed my day at Carnethy.

Well done Pat & JD for your 21st Carnethy. It was a great day out, even if the start was a bit stressful with Manny forgetting his number & having to get a lift to & from the high school and made it back within seconds of the race starting. Great turn out of Westies. Hope you all had a great evening at John & Fiona's.

Yes, well done to Pat and JD hitting 21, and Pat with a fantastic time to boot! Brenda had hoped to hang on to Pat or even beat her in, so she could join in the ceremonial dousing with champagne as the first lady to finish 21 crossed the line - no chance with Pat flying around, but she took great satisfaction in getting it right up Graham on the last hill. However I may have taken the shine off her gloss when I pointed out that Graham was even more pregnant than she was, and that Grahams bump had already cost him a small fortune, whereas hers was just about to cost a packet...groan.
I had a bit of an epic warm up by leaving my number in the car back at the school, and thanks to Jean Wall for giving it a bit of Starsky&Hutch driving to get me down and back just as the starter was dropping the flag! I should be grateful to Jean ,as if it had been Dick I was pleading for a lift from, I suspect he would had driven me to North Berwick instead, or possibly just run me down! A great turn out of Westies and despite me running like a coo, everyone else seemed to have good runs in great conditions. Drew, Chris & Jane were all there in helping capacities which was great to see.
Sorry to have missed the party at John & Fi's but I trust it was a good night.
It would be nice to see the Rt Hon Al Campbell's Ode to Pat on these pages...
Well done Westies, Pat & JD, a great day out!

Well, what a great day out for a run with some folk! It was fabulous to see so many Westies out on the field - runners and supporters. As for the race - wee hee - got round without any blisters or cuts or bruises - just the aching muscles to put up with now. And what a treat to get routed down the scree and the snow at the end, made me smile even more. Team Edwards may attempt some more outings to running events in 2010!

A smashing day on the hills - worthy of the Winter Olympics!
Managed to pass quite a few folk on the descents but unfortunately all except one of them passed me again later and Brenda finally caught me on the last slope up Carnethy and promptly disappeared into the distance. The long dreaded descent was a very pleasant surprise with 2 big snow patches to bomb down and we were even allowed on to some scree instead of the usual stumble through the heather. The final field was a bit of a plod so not a great time for me but still good enough for an over-60 PB - 7 minutes faster than last year!

A fantastic day out for everyone including yours truly. Thanks to Manny and the team for a spectacular champagne reception at the finish in honour of my 21st. Goodness only knows what the bus driver thought as I hobbled on to the bus clutching an almost empty bottle of champagne and reeking of alcohol. I might have had to walk back to Penicuik but he didn't bat an eye must say something about East coasters. Weather was perfect and thanks to Nigels hill rep sessions I managed a fairly respectable time. Roll on 25.
