Glasgow University 5-mile Road Race

7th November 2009

Considering that it clashes with Tinto and the Loch Ossian weekend, there was a reasonable turnout of 5 running Westies and 1 marshall at this long-established race. Isabel Coombs was on timekeeping duty (and cheering at the end of lap 1), while Hamilton, Gibson, Ian Struthers, and GrimOrr joined me for a jog around our home turf. It was a still and dry day, good for running, and the only interruption occurred as we had to squeeze through the wee gate leading towards the Switchback, as the main gate wasn't open (why?).

I got a default PB as it was my first go at this race, pushed along by Hamilton in hot pursuit and speedy work colleague Annmarie McCaffrey of Kirkie Olympians, who sidled up for a chat at the end of lap 1. Westies finished in the following order:-

Orr the Younger
Semple
Fleming
Orr the Grimmer
Struthers

Grim maintained that the race used to be better back when God was a boy and it followed cart tracks around the farms of the area. Still seemed like a good day out to me.

Full results to follow.

Well, Orr the Younger, that was suitably painful...........no,no, not your report, the race, I mean. A blast of a 5 miler, and should be no trouble at all............... Oh but those were the days, "of wine and roses",or something like that. You were long gone,Johnston, could'nt stay with you. Must have been that unnamed athlete that tried to trip me up, that put me right off? That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. 'Course Struthers just scoffs loudly, shakes his head, says how many more excuses do you want? Well 20 might fit the bill.
At the finish line received a profuse apology and a big hug from her, so all's well that ends well.

Now Des has finally come down from his haresandhounds high, we have this year's times...hooray! somehow I'm about a minute faster than in 2008. Can also pare down my time as that gate at the top of the hill, 300 yards from the start, is (as Ian Struthers observed) as effective as the stile at the start of Carnethy in slowing (stopping, indeed) the hordes.
My training regime (I can reveal) is no racing since May (the Neilston Pad) and precious little training. Must be those nice drugs on the haresandhounds website then?
