Mugdock Turbo X
12th September 2009
Billed as Turbo X-rated "Pure Filth", this race lived up to its name by providing a few muddy bits on the 10-mile trail around Mugdock Country Park.
More than 400 runners crammed onto the start line, rubbing shoulders with several elite international fell runners and orienteers. The race started steadily enough before the pace started to tell and the field strung out. As usual I was battling alongside Paul Thompson for the first few km before opening a slight gap.
The route passed through much familiar territory with sections of Christmas Handicap and Childrens Home Run, but also with plenty of weaving through the forest on narrow trails. In the final couple of miles I managed to catch Brian McEwan and Dougal Ross to finish 9th.
1. Nick Swinburn, 1:03:55
9. Chris Upson, 1:16:08
16. Natalie White, 1:20:47
24. Stephen Bell, 1:23:54
57. Hamilton Semple, 1:33:26
107. Mathew Bull, 1:40:31
187. Helen MacPherson, 1:50:37
188. Gillian Irvine, 1:50:37

By the time I got round (I was a marshall / runner / sweeper) ...the course was VERY muddy. A great route and I am looking forward to a slightly quicker time next year :-)
Good to see a few yellow vests out on such a sunny day.
Gillian - how did Lynn get on ? Kept an eye out for her ...but she was well ...well ahead of the back markers !

Well done Chris, Hamilton, Helen and Gillian for representing Westies on our own turf- it sounded like great fun. I'm sorry I couldn't make the race, even if it did have a silly name; it was such a beautiful late summer's morning. Will we be following the route on our next Dogmuck club run I wonder? Surely a run could never be too filthy for us.

Well done the Westies. Particularly impressive run by Chris at the sharp end.

Map of GPS track now added to original post, so feel free to attempt to repeat the route, although you'd be struggling without all the marking tape. There was a cheeky shortcut at 12.6km shown on the map that 2 runners in the top 10 appeared to have taken, judging by their impossibly fast Turbo X splits!

Great course, harder and longer than last year but good fun. Kept expecting Bear Grylls to appear out of the mud!! At long last a run in my Westies vest!
Graham, Lynn managed to run around course in 2.09 and was really pleased to be back running.

As you approached the Turbo section the sound system was cranked right up with "Eye of the tiger". Battling, sliding, squelching, pummelling?, thro' this darkened narrow chasm (well - just your ordinary trail section up to your neck in the back peaty variety). Singing along to it was not quite mandatory, only should have been. As you know......this really put at least 5 minutes onto my time. By heck this lad's really scraping the barrel now.
Well done to all who survived.
