Ben Nevis 2009
Well at least the torrential rain on Saturday meant that Glen Coe looked spectacular on the drive up, with waterfalls off every bit of hill you could actually see through the cloud. But I wasn’t looking forward to getting out of the warm and dry car. A quick stop for a haircut in Fort William before the race – and by quick I mean quick, it took the barber less than a couple of minutes. I know my hair is fast receding, but surely not that fast!
Compared to the haircut, the race was much slower, the knee is still not right after landing in a hole during the LAMM and I decided to start off at a plod. That was the first mistake: starting near the back and having to battle through the ploughed up field courtesy of the runners in front. My other mistake was probably entering on less than ideal training, but it turned out to be a great day, one of my most enjoyable runs for a while. The atmosphere was fantastic, particularly the laughter from all around as runner after runner ended up on their backsides on the green wall above Red Burn (with me seeming to contribute to the mud bath more than most). The odd few views through the cloud were also great.
Not much sign of any Westies, but Manny and Graham looked very impressive on their descents as I was still plodding for the summit. I had a great descent after deciding to try and overtake at least 15 runners on the way down, I got to 14 and then, WOW, did that last road section kill me off. There should be a rule against flat tarmac at the end of a hill race.
Selected Westies results, well done to the rest of you and yes, I do seem to have been the back marker for Westies:
46 01:53:57 Manny Gorman
72 01:58:15 Graham Kelly
134 02:07:10 David Rogers
237 02:22:24 Murdo Macleod
241 02:22:58 Jacques Penderis

"Manny looked impressive"!? Yeah, in his namby pamby pink girly tutu, fairyfoot flouncing tiddly toes down the hill. Yeah, I bet I looked impressive on my way to my slowest time in 10 years, getting up 5 or 6 minutes slower and then losing a whopping 5 minutes to Graham "cannae descend for toffee" Campbell from HHR, from the summit.
A shocker, along with the weather.
Graham, on the other hand, did indeed have a cracking run, only a few minute behind and good solid runs from Dave, Mindy & Jacques given the fantastic surfing conditions - I had hoped to drown my sorrows in the Grog with them all later but all baled out (pun intended) for home, leaving me & Brenda to represent the club into the night.
Still, at least they turned up for the race - Mr Benny saw the forecast and was scared of a wash, Herr Gorgas just isn't allowed out anymore, Don has had dysentry since June 30th, and the wummin....eh, are there any wummin in the club now?
Anyway, most importantly, Scotland won and now only have to beat Holland (ha!) so like the world cup, there is always next time...

Well done everyone in those conditions. I've only just recovered from walking about for two weeks with a bit of glass in my foot so when I saw the weather forecast I reckoned I'd be timed out before I got out of the start field. Maybe Johnston can find the (in)famous photo of Manny after the 1988 race to illustrate the effect of such bad weather on the Ben.

Glass in your foot!?
I knew you had a drink problem.
Aim for the mouth the next time - shouldn't be hard!

There's a good photo of the Gorman boys at the Ben in 1987, amongst the late '80s archive which I put up recently. Next batch of photos will probably be 1990s ones, once I get them organised.

Another year and another Ben race …
This one was a bit of a family affair. In addition to Mirsia coming along for support, my Dad, Uncle Jack, cousin Alan (who should have been running) and his wife Karyn made the trip north through the tipping rain. Alan took the sensible decision to adopt a spectator role due to the silly conditions however.
I did my usual faff on what to wear. Instead of was it just a vest of vest and t-shirt, it was which waterproof to take and whether to actually start with it! Had a brief exchange of pleasantries with Murdo, Jaques and Manny before lining up in the waterlogged field. The MRT on the summit advised on the conditions – minus three (windchill) degrees, 25 mph wind and around 50 feet of visibility. As per last year, I got a good start and did not need to fight for position heading up the road. Dave Rodgers nipped past which gave enough incentive to regain a few places prior to leaving the road and starting up the track. A fair few of the walkers (all of whom had multiple layer and hoods up) appeared surprised to see runners scrambling up into the mist and some seemed a bit annoyed for some reason. I passed and was passed by one of the Spanish girls over for the race – couldn’t help but wonder what she made of it all. Over the red burn and onto the steeper stuff. The soaking that the ground had been subjected to along with the numerous pairs of Walshes and Inov8s took its toll on the hill and there were a few very minor landslips and “stuff” slid off the hill. As always, it was nice to see Robb Jebb coming down …not too far to the summit then. I started to get too cold for comfort and stopped briefly to stick my jacket and hat on. Lost a few places but regained them when the folks ahead decided a bit more protection was in order as well. Manny passed by (dressed in yellow and not pink as stated), round the summit and it was my turn for the downhill. The wee Spanish lass disappeared at an incredible rate and I held on for as long as I could …I managed all of about 30 seconds before realising it was going to end in tears. Managed a bit of a tumble / bounce / tumble combination just above the green wall to which one of the MRT suggested that my arse was better designed for such behaviour rather than my head. I picked myself up …thanked him and promptly went my length again! I did however take his advice on the wall itself as my shorts (and arse) can testify to. Back on the tourist track I was pleased to find I was either matching last years time …or possibly even just ahead. Nearly missed the wee muddy track which was fast becoming liquid slurry which gives a bit of a short cut but once on it, realised I had no control whatsoever. Resigning myself to another tumble I tried to slow down a bit, caught a toe and rolled forward coming to an undignified stop on the path below. Unfortunately, it was head on rock which actually brought me to a halt – a bit dazed, a couple of spectators helped me to my feet and a tad dizzy I continued down the track slower than before. Stopped to duck my head in a stream (not sure why I though that would help but it did). Feeling much better I stepped thing up again but I had lost a pile of time and even more places. Hit the road and looked at my watch 1:51 …not long to go. Managed to catch Stuart Simpson of the Ochils and we had a wee game of attack and defend positions as we continued towards the finish. Last turn and into an even more waterlogged field!
Was over the moon to keep under the two hours given the conditions but couldn’t help wonder what the finish time would have been without that last fall …grrrrrrrrr. Roll on next year!
Congrats to all Westies who took part !
