Glen Clova Hill Race

3rd august 97

A very good course providing lots of mixed running terrain. Weather conditions were good for a long run, with going quite firm even in the peat hags. Fortunately I had been warned by MR that it was a slog up to Dreish from the glen, so had kept plenty in reserve. This meant that I caught J. Macrae and B. Brooks of Lochaber and another unattached runner, between the coll and summit. Unfortunately (luckily!), Neil and Adrian were too far in front to chase, giving me an enjoyable ridge run on my own with a bit of a bad route choice on the descent to the finish.

Helene, in training for her 100k champs, was looking fresh as she finished well up the field to take the first female prize. This obviously helped the girl as she went on to do a PB in the 100k champs. Sandy, who had been running the day before, was next giving us the prize for second team, ahead of, respectively, Carnethy, Ochil and Cosmics. Unfortunately good packing by J. Macrae, G. Brooks and B. Brooks in 4th 5th and 7th (all within 2min) denied us the prize for 1st team. Matt, doing a long course as training for the Ben Nevis race, looked like he might actually be enjoying himself as he finished. And thanks for the shouts of encouragement Matt.

Lynne was the final member of the crew to arrive, having successfully completed a hard course, which claimed several DNFs. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Bill Gauld for giving me a lift as I was hitch hiking up the glen on Saturday night. And also for letting me leave my things in his car.
