Westies in the late 1980s
Last one in the current series...this lot should be from 1988/89.
If anyone has actually run a race since then (whether it's a parkrun or the Ochils 2000s), please feel free to post a report to displace all this archive material!

Is that Davie Thom looking stunned at DC's good taste in jumpers and haircut at the Rowardennan fashion convention?

Indeed Iain it is ex-Captain Dave Thom surveying what can only be described as a superb hand-knitted jumper. For info, the haircut was £2.35 from a wee guy in Pollokshaws Road. The others are Alex Blackley ( the only man I know to do a 33minute 10K on Beta Blockers) and Chris Bradley ( moved to England).
Photo No. 1 was taken at Loch An Eileen in the Cairngorms. Long story but great excitement when the polis turned up to say that the Mountain Rescue had been called out. The guy waiting 4 hours for the hand over is Bob Cant.
I believe the next photo is taken at the Skye Half marathon and features the grown-up-but-still-gorgeous Laura Coombs, Andy Broon and Maureen Scott, in addition to Archie.
The line-up for Skye is George Irvine, Gillian, Maureen, Isabel, Pat, Tony, Archie and Jane. Ah, don't they look fit!
Of course it's not just Ian Anybody, it's Ian Somebody. In fact it's an impressively lithe Ian Struthers. He's still wearing the same shorts!!!!!
The last photo was taken at Oban pier just before the first stage of the west-to-east coast relay started at 10pm and features Bob Cant, Colin Aldridge and John Wellings. Bob disappeared east, Colin gave up running but can still be encountered in a selection of west end hostelries and John lives in Edinburgh and can often be spotted at the Carnethy 5....but is rarely, if ever, to be found on the Cairngorms, which takes us back to the reason for the polis in the first photo.

I look so stunned as no one told me I had to bring a hideous jumper; also, I don't remember the gay look being so popular back then, oh, just me, ah well. I think I may have taken the Skye pics, I was certainly there. Alex Blackley moved to Hamilton and quietly gave up running, as far as I know.

Dave T (and others) - if you have any more old Westies photos that you'd like to contribute to this series, please let me know (via the Contact form on this site). The forthcoming 1990's ones just don't have the same level of knitwear awfulness in them...
Interesting to see that some former members are still lurking around the website!
