Westies in the early 1980s

Here are some old photos from the Westies archive. I've added captions where I can (click on the photos to see the full picture), but I'd be very grateful if some of our long-standing members could add comments to supply names and details where I've not been able to do so. I can then update the captions on the photos.

This first batch are largely from 1981-84. There are more (from later years) to follow.

Please let me know if there are any corrections to be made or if you'd like any photos removed, and I'll be happy to do so.

OK, here goes with most of the photos.

Photo 2 is Craig McAdam (hubby of Pauline), Possibly Dougie Strachan,Bill Sheridan, Sam McAdam, John Kelly and Andy Brown, at the Isle of Man Easter Athletics Festival, approx 1980. Bill won the overall individual title .

Photo 6 is Craig, Bill, Bill's girlfriend at the time (sorry, can't remember her name), Andy, Dougie and Sam, again at the IOM.

Photo 7 is Dr Struthers (well-spotted Drew), Barbara Murray(one of the best long-distance female athletes in Scotland at the time), yours truly, Bill Sheridan, Raph Murray (married to Barbara and now living in Macclesfield), Danny McKay (ex club secretary), Tom Logue and the infamous Robin YP Thomas.

Photo 8 is a youthful-looking John Kelly, Paul Porter and Bill S, possibly still students, certainly acting like it?

Photo 9 is Sam McAdam again at the IOM.

Photo 10 is Nicos Scolarios, Willie McColl, Andy Lockhart (ex Westies Captain and still working at Glasgow Uni),John Tolmie (occasionally spotted still running along the Kelvin), Bill S, Willie Reid (last spotted in Fife) and the one -and-only Des Gilmore. It was possiblytaken prior to the formation of Westerlands CCC.

Photo 11 is Craig McAdam at IOM.

Ah, didn't we look good then???????

    Update to Dave's comments -

Photo 1 - It's Doug Robertson, not Doug Strachan. And Sam Alexander (not McAdam - I deny any relationship)

Photo 2 - This was on the ferry to Isle of Man in the morning, before the road race in the afternoon. The group is warming up for the race by drinking pints - which prompted the captain of the Hares & Hound to regard Bill with disdain and remark ' I'm glad you're not in my team '. Bill, of course, went on to win the overall individual title and leave the Hares & Hounds in his dust. Bizarrely, he was also voted best dressed man of the weekend (irony, if you knew Bill at that time). And it was Moira O'Boyle.

Thanks Craig for the corrections. Of course, it's photo 6 that's on the ferry, not photo 2, either that or the ferry is worryingly close to Douglas esplanade! I can vouch for Craig's comments about the Hares & Hounds(although to be fair, they did pick up the team prize) but, by the end of the weekend Bill and the rest of the club was held in awe for performances both on and off the road. It was a decisive factor in my decision to join Westies.

Now, of course, the club's performances have declined in tandem with the amount of alcohol consumption, with a couple of notable exceptions. Manny's recent Corbettathon was sustained by generous quantities of the local brew.

QED.The evidence is there for all to see, so forget the training and get drinking everyone!

Thanks, Craig Who (do you have a brother who's a Doctor, by any chance?) :-)

Great to hear tales of fast times and off-track revelry. Stay tuned for more old photos of people I don't know - I'll upload another wee batch soon.

Very interesting photos but has anyone spotted the glaring ommisions. No Westies women, cause they didn't exist then. The first photo you have with the women is of Ann McDonald and Isabel Coombs completing the West Highland Way race in 1987.

Indeed Pat, it did strike me that there wiz nae burdz back then. How times change - I can't imagine such a situation existing today. I think it's only the really old photos which don't have any Westies Wimmin in them.
